Weird graphics errors on MV1FZ (Neo Geo MVS) [Solved]
« on: February 13, 2017, 12:13:39 PM »

New member here, sorry if this is in the wrong subforum!

Just picked up a MV1FZ, and it boots to a checkerboard with no cart in. Work RAM test runs for 15+ minutes without any issues.

When I put in my copy of Metal Slug, I get this:

I did the 5V mod, battery replacement mod and am powering the board from jamma pins 1 (GND) and 3 (5v). There's no visible corrosion or damaged traces as far as I can see. The board has had a soap/water/dry wash and the cartridge slot and cartridge contacts are clean. I've pressed and bumped some of the ICs while the system is running with a cart to check for dry/broken solder points, but that has no effect. None of the chips feel hot to the touch while the system is running.

I did read through all of channelmaniac's work logs and I'm unsure how to debug some of the other ICs on the board. I have a multimeter/logic probe and am comfortable using them, but the way this board is laid out makes it tricky to test points with a cart in the system.

I feel like the way the graphics are being rendered points to the problem, but I'm not familiar enough with Neo Geo MVS systems to say..

I don't have another cart to test with, but I should have one in the next few days.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

EDIT: Looks like it was my Metal Slug cart. Got another cart in today and it works fine. I guess it's time to start looking into debugging a broken cartridge!
