Black Tape
« on: October 12, 2017, 01:01:14 PM »
Anyone know the name of this thin 1" wide black tape that is used to cover the edge traces on a touch screen glass panel?

Its not electrical or a cloth tape.

Thanks for the help.  Never would have thought is was a cloth type of tape.  It feels like a thin plastic bag and is very glossy.

While shopping for the tape you mentioned, I found out that the tape I peeled off was Mylar Heat Resistant/High Temperature Insulation Adhesive Tape. The stuff they wrap transformer coils with.  I wonder if that was done by TOVIS or the someone else after the fact.

I have use what's called gaff tape... I think that's how it's spelled  :Scratch-Head: . It's a cloth tape. I have sealed touch screens with it before. Worked great.

Me too, I think it is also called "Gaffer's Tape" but people often shorten the name.
It's available at many places in different sizes, here is one at Home Depot:

The mylar tape I have used is different looking from the tape you removed from your screen but there could be lots of variations nowadays. The mylar is strong polyester or other thick plastic tape, comes in a variety of colors but usually is a shiny brownish color, doesn't allow sharp electrical leads or solder joint points to puncture thru so reduces arcing voltages, if that is a concern. It is often used as electrical insulation to cover exposed voltage connections that are near a ground like a metal chassis. Here's an example:

Here is the panel before I removed the black Mylar tape.  Which was pointless because I ended up just buying a new 3M touch screen too to avoid the hassle of swapping it.  The touch screen on the defective dim panel is fine so I guess I can part that out later to someone who needs one.

The tape you removed was factory original.  I have done many of these in all diff. shapes and sizes.  I use some tape that I acquired from back in my Ford days for certain recalls-each recall had a whole roll with it and you never used it all so I got to keep the left overs.  It's almost the same material.

I assume one would want a high temp (non-metallic) insulating Mylar tape to put over top of the touch screen traces and seal the touch screen to the LCD panel?   :Scratch-Head:

I may give the Mylar tape a try.

Can you re-use the tape you removed? Is it just for electrical insulation, or is it holding 2 pieces of the screen together that will separate if the tape is not strong enough?

No, I trashed it.  I would think the adhesion would be less so I wouldn't want to re-use tape anyway.

The double sided table is still holding touch screen and lcd together.  I guess the tape does triple duty, insulate the touch traces, sealed the touch to the lcd, and also help hold things together.

I found some on eBay that ships from PA.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Insulation-Adhesive-Mylar-tape-Hig-Temp-Transformer-Coil-Wrap-Black-4CM-66M/322186637628

It comes in 2cm and 4cm widths, I will try the 4cm tape on my new touch and panel when they get here.
