S2000 Reel 1 Tilt error on start up

I'm shopping out a S2000.. I did the Clear and Key and setup on the machine.. When I went to start the game by closing the door, the machine went into a reel 1 tilt.. I opened and closed the door, but once again reel tilt 1.. I don't see any thing that might be rubbing on reel one.. I swapped reel 1 and 2, but still getting reel 1 tilt? I powered off and checked the reels wiring plug on the MPU, and re-seated the plug on the mother board.. Next I swapped the IO board on the side on the MPU box with a known tested good IO, but still reel 1 tilt? Reel 1 plug looks good, no bent or broken pins? Reel 1 will index 1 position, but not spin like reels 2 and 3.. It does this with the door open too when the machine is powered on.. Any ideas?? The only thing I saw when i did a search was the check for something rubbing on the reel number 1 like the ribbon cable, but it even tilts with the door open...

I always start with unplugging the reel and resetting. then swapping 1 and 2. assuming you have plug in reels.

I have swapped reel 1&2 with the same result. The swapped 1&3 with the same result a reel tilt 1 message. I even removed the reels wiring to inspect it closer. No loose wires to connectors, and all are seated in there plugs, none pushed back. Also inspected the pins on the mother board where the harness plugs in. So far every thing looks fine?

Was your problem with the SG chips or the enhanced board it's self. I'd hate to think this is caused by my MPU.. Varta battery's been removed and the boards looks good, no acid damage.

It was just the SG's, not due to a bad MPU in my case(s).

Swap a different board in. Don't bother changing any chips, just do ram error resets and see what happens

So put the SG 1&2, Version and Base chip on a known good MPU and try them. Should I swap out the 2 ram chips too?
FYI... I used a key 31 not my 45 because it's MIA.. Missing in action.. That should'nt have caused this reel tilt??

I meant you should try it with a straight board swap, no chip swithing. Try to narrow down the problem area

My bet is on the MPU. I have a board that would give me that error on reel 4 and not spin like yours. Fortunately for me if I  use it in a 3 reel machine the board still works without error. When you get down to component replacement on the MPU I would be interested in what the solution is.

No I haven't that's why I was asking if you do find a repair I would be interested in what parts you changed. I just use my board in a three reel machine. I guess the MPU doesn't check 4 and 5 in a three reel machine so it works fine. With yours being an early row a repair or MPU replace would be your only option.

That's what I'm hoping is not my problem. These dang 500 series boards are getting harder to find and more expensive to buy. When you get a machine and the MPU is clean, you just hope it's good. I've had boards that that look horrable (green) but worked. With all of these machine that were in the Casinos, didn't anyone fix the MPU boards, or did they just grab a new board? It would be nice to find a board tester.

With surface mounted components it becomes very hard to repair them. The casinos would just replace a board. Nowadays if it's an S2000 in a casino they will just retire the machine. I've converted most of mine to 1270 with legacy adapter but you have to change the backplane board also.

I know of a person that can do surface mount components but without knowing what's failed your just guessing.


It seems to be the 502 MPU is my problem here. I swapped all the game chips to a known good 504 board and it is fine. I tried a completely different set on the 502 with the same reel tilt 1 message.. Add another MPU to the bad pile and hope the be repaired someday list.
