Mav500/MK5 Set up/Cycling issue
« on: March 30, 2016, 12:38:23 PM »
Hello Newbie here,

Any help would be appreciated, I don't know anything about these machines. I just got a Mav500/MK5. It hasn't worked since I received it a couple days ago. It has a black screen with white words that runs a test and when done, cycles all over again. It takes hours cycling and does stop, but says No Signal, Check Cable. I have tried reseating the boards, checking if everything is pressed in, and checking wires. Tried using the jackpot key, and meter audit key, but they don't change anything. I am at a loss. Thank you

Check that the chips on the logic board are inserted correctly and fully seated.

Definitely check the EPROMs. MK5 machines don't actually test themselves properly in the POST, while it says "Eprom Checksum Ok" on the screen they only check to see if the program code is OK and not the EPROMs themselves. After it passes all tests and says "System Startup Code Entered", then it silently tests program code, graphics and sound data (which is basically in chunks of binary data like a hard drive) and if one of these three checksums fail the machine reboots. In most cases, the program data (and "EPROM checksum") only takes up U7 and U11, and occasionally parts of U8 and U12 but rarely U9/U13 or U10/U14. If any one of those latter chips fails to load correctly for any reason (anything from a bad connection to bit rot), the game will still pass the initial startup test simply because the program code tested good. You can even have chips completely missing from the board and the game will still say OK in the POST because the first 2 or 4 chips were still there!

Just out of curiosity, which game is it? A photo of the game trying to boot would also be nice.

A badly seated (or bad) EPROM on a MK6 system will fail one or more of the checksum tests in the POST and go into a reboot loop if it fails.

Did this ever get resolved?
Have a machine doing the same thing currently, have tried 2 different known working boards, says starting game code, beeps once, then cycles the same thing.
