CEI Poker machine needing repair advice
« on: November 22, 2017, 04:16:40 PM »
I recently posted about a CEI video poker machine that stopped working after a royal flush. Original post http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=16403.msg87420#msg87420

Taking the advice listed I searched the right side of the machine for a 'reset key' but could not locate one. I also looked inside for the 5101 RAM chip so that I could perform the 'bare metal reset' on it. Can you provide any more details about where I might find this chip? Like what board and what part of the machine that its in?

While looking for the RAM chip I did pull out what looks to be the main board and noticed that it contains a component that is burnt up. This part is listed as 200D14 22. Are these components still available or are there any good alternatives that I could use to repair this? I am wondering if it is this bad component that is prevent the machine from booting up.

I'll attach pics of the right side of the machine as well as the burnt up component. I will also post additional pics of the machine in another post in hopes that they might help identify the exact model.

Thanks in advance for all of the help!

I've added some additional photos of the machine innards in case that makes the machine model more identifiable

Thanks!

Welcome to NLG. It looks like you have enough quarters in the coin hopper!  :cool_thumb_up:

I'm not a CEI expert but most slot machines designed for use in a casino have a jackpot reset switch somewhere so the casino attendant could reset the machine after you get paid your jackpot. If the reset switch is on the outside of the machine it will be a keyswitch that requires a key to operate. If the reset switch is inside the machine then it can be an ordinary pushbutton or other switch that the attendant switches after unlocking and opening the main door of the machine. You posted a photo of a reset key, did it come with the machine? One of the pushbuttons inside is labeled "Hand Pay", this may be what CEI called their jackpot reset switch.

The cmos ram chip you are referring to is probably the one I circled in yellow below. It is on a piggy-back board that plugs into the main circuit board which is called the "mpu" board. Take a look at the chip I've circled, see if it is in a socket and what the writing on top of the chip says. Also, on this piggy-back board is the battery for keeping the data contents on the cmos ram intact when the machine is powered off. That battery may be dead, you can check it with a meter to see. It should be about 3.6 volts when new. I don't know if a dead battery will keep this machine from operating but if it is bad I'd replace it.

The burned part on your mpu board is a capacitor, I don't believe this particular capacitor is critical to the operation of the machine. It is there by good design to remove any transients (voltage spikes) that might occur on the power supply line going to the nearby ic's. You will see many of these type capacitors on the circuit board, usually near an ic. You can snip out the burned capacitor with small wire cutters and clean the smoke residue off the circuit board with a little soapy water or alcohol. If you need to scrub a little use something like a q-tip or soft brush. Let it dry completely before applying any power.

If you or someone you know can solder you can replace this capacitor, it is probably a small value capacitor, possibly something like a 22pF, 15volt size. This capacitor or suitable equivalent ones are available. If someone here has a similar mpu board they may be able to tell you what size or part number that burned capacitor is so you can replace it if you want to. If you look on the mpu board you should see a part number for the entire circuit board. We may be able to find a schematic drawing or parts list for it.

Thanks for posting all the photos, they make it helpful for anyone that might want to give advice or offer suggestions. I am reposting your photo of the machine here from your other thread to make it easier for everyone to see.

Also, these machines can be very reflective when taking photos, something to watch out for........

Cut that capacitor off of the board, it is not critical.
Remove the circled chip next to the battery and short it's legs on bare metal (all at once) for about a minute to clear memory, re install chip.
If the game doesn't come up (assuming battery still has over 3 volts) start mashing the buttons on the front with both hands until the game comes up.
That is another secret method that CEI never told anyone about.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

Wow, you are both amazing! I can't believe how quickly you respond and how helpful you are. Thank you so much for the time that you dedicate to helping out others.

The reflection in the machine is my father-in-law. We razzed him for a few weeks for that one! We won't make that mistake again. lol

We are going over today for t-giving dinner so I'll report back whether it worked.

Thanks again!

While you're there you may want to look at the traces on the board. It looks like that cap was laying down when it failed. It is possible that it burned thru one or two of those traces.

Wow. I guess the CEI games like people who get physical. Lol. Did you have a chance to look for that 30 beau plug, and large 72 pin one?

Happy Thanksgiving Alan.

Reporting back. It works again!

I first checked the battery voltage which turned out to be just fine. Next, I pulled the chip out of the socket and shorted the pins as suggested. When I put the board back in, it booted up just fine. My father in-law was thrilled.

Thanks again for offering your expertise!

Sorry for the newb post, but I've looked at the other photos relating to this problem and am not certain on the fix. Was wondering if someone could show me which chip on my board needs to be pulled to be grounded? I got the Royal Flush on this CEI Casino Poker machine a few years back and its been sitting ever since. Thanks in advance if anyone can help
