Model: MV1FZ
Symptom: No audio

Board had attempted repairs and had been recapped.

The volume control would spin 360 degrees and was replaced. The audio amp would not "pop" the speaker on power up. Replaced the amp IC and now had background hiss but no audio. Replaced 5 caps and checked the plated thru holes around the Op Amp IC then replaced the Op Amp IC and tested.

The audio amp IC was dead and the Op Amp had signals going into it and nothing coming out.

Model: MV4
Symptom: Dead

Replaced dead 74LS74 in the clock circuit and patched one burnt trace under it to restore the clock signal. Board was now showing garbage on the screen and was stuck with a click of death problem.

The chip control signals and address line signals were missing from the Backup RAM. Replaced the 68000 CPU and a bubbled up NEO-B0 chipset chip to get the game to boot. Replaced a 74LS245 and 74LS74 in the video output circuit and tested. Installed a coin cell battery kit and replaced missing hardware. Tested.

Symptom: Z80 Error

Replaced the Z80 CPU and the system booted to the crosshatch screen, but had no audio during the hardware tests. Recapped the audio section to fix the missing audio issue, but the board was missing several sound effects and the coin up sound was distorted. Replaced the YM2610 audio IC to restore all sounds. Tested.

Tip: Troubleshooting Stuck on Green / Calendar Error

When troubleshooting the MV4 for Calendar Error messages or Stuck on Green, first inspect the power to the chip. Pin 14 should have battery voltage (minus a diode forward voltage drop) when the power is off and +5v when the power is on. If the voltage is missing, check the power trace coming from the battery backup area.

Next, check the crystal with an oscilloscope since most logic probes won't show any pulses for its low signal. If it is missing replace the crystal first. If that's not it then reflow the 2 small caps next to the crystal. If that's not it replace the caps. It's VERY rare for the D4990 to fail.

If you have crystal oscillation then check the connections to/from the D4990 for battery damaged traces and patch any dead ones with Kynar wire wrap wire.

Model: MV4
Symptom: No audio from cartridge games

Board had attempted repair damage

Removed a partially cut off IC, fixed a short on a sound bus CPU line to that IC, and installed a replacement IC and socket and patched 2 burnt traces. Tested. CPU address line was still dead. Replaced the IC driving that CPU address line and tested.

Model: MV2
Symptom: No audio

Removed the leaking battery and cleaned the board. Audio tests worked but cartridges would not have any sound. Pin 24 (/OE) of the M1 ROM on the cartridge was stuck high. Backtracked it to find that one of the 2 pins on the cartridge edge connector for selecting the audio ROM was floating. Patched bad trace to restore audio. Removed the 470 ohm resistor from the charging circuit and installed a coin cell battery and holder. Set the clock/calendar and tested.

Symptom: Dead

Replaced a missing 74LS157 IC on the board to find a Video RAM error at $8000. Replaced a bad Sprite RAM (2K x 8 DIP) to find graphics corruption and low audio on the left channel. Patched a bad trace on a NE0-257 IC and cleaned the board and slots to fix the graphics corruption then recapped the audio section to fix the output issue. Tested.
