Help getting started with a Supreme
« on: May 02, 2016, 03:19:44 PM »
Hi everyone,

I've spent the last couple of days scouring this forum for information about a Supreme board that I've purchased from eBay with no idea what it was! I've made a degree of progress communicating with the board but so far I can't get any display at all on the LED panels, although the power LEDs on the rear of the panels do light up, so I assume the issue is signal. I don't have any specific goals for the setup but I like tinkering and learning about stuff like this.

First to describe the setup, I have a Supreme board that came mounted on a chassis panel with an integrated power supply, and three 12 cell LED panels which appear to be part of the same overall assembly (the power supply has three longer 5v outputs to suit the displays as well as a short one for the Supreme). Pictures hopefully attached below.

I'm able to communicate with the Supreme over the serial port and issue basic commands that it appears to respond to. Status enquiries on the board show that it runs though various apps such as "Play Mik App" and "Progressive App" so it appears to be happily doing something, at least. I've included some output below.

I have the Mikohn Download software and I can connect to the Supreme and get a list of files. I haven't tried any file transfers yet.

So, some questions from me firstly related to the setup as it is:

1) The power supply only seems to have a 5v output for the Supreme but the Supreme board also has a header for a 12v supply. Is 12v required? I've tried with and without it, but the board seems to operate fine with only the 5v supply connected.

2) What is the correct way to connect the 10 pin IDC outputs from the Supreme to the LED panels? I've tried a few different ways without success. On the Supreme side there are outputs J5 and J6 (primary and secondary). Should these both be active? On the LED panel side I know they daisy-chain but which of the two 10 pin connectors is 'in' (from the Supreme, or the previous panel in the chain) and which one is 'out'?

3) Should there be some kind of output appearing on the displays right now, or am I missing something more basic in my setup? I've seen references to boot information, setup menus (via the config switch and buttons on the board), error messages and the like. So far I haven't seen any life from the panels whatsoever.

I guess if I can confirm that I haven't just connected things the wrong way around then I can start asking some more questions about troubleshooting. I'd appreciate any input that forum members have to offer and particularly if anyone has any photos of a similar setup that they could share so I can see what a working setup looks like in terms of wiring.

Cheers!

Graham

The old site has much more on Supremes check topic above and search there. It has been a long time since I played with them. The displays that you have are standard meters for slot machines. They probably are not what you are looking for. Supreme panels are much larger. The pictures show a small display 1x2 these are much larger.
You do not need the 12v supply.

Thanks qbert!

So what I need is a different controller to drive the small displays? What would such a controller be called if I was looking for one?

Conversely, what would the appropriate Supreme display panel be called if I was doing a web search for one to suit the logic board I have?

Cheers

Graham

A regular cham2 will drive your displays with the supreme.
Is your plan to use them in slots or just as display without machines?

If you are interested in the large panel. Rudy has them and for a great price. ( I paid almost $200 bucks for mine 4 years ago)
http://rudysdeals.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=44&product_id=3171
You will also need power supplies to drive the large panel. One supply for each three panel segments.
I believe Rudy has them also. The large panels do some really cool animations.

Hi qbert.

I'm just interested in stand-alone display, I don't have any slot machines.

So, to confirm - the regular cham2 is the "non plus" version? Would the "plus" version also be compatible with the Supreme, or are they only for stand-alone operation? Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks for the link to the large panel, the price is great but I have a feeling the shipping to Australia would be a killer! I might ask them to quote me a shipping price all the same.

Cheers

Graham

Check this topic also http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?topic=26206.0

At the time I was trying to do scrolling messages on my supreme.
Also I believe in Australia Supremes were also called Cycle Stealers if that helps.
