IS IT THE BATTERY?
« on: October 17, 2016, 05:29:14 PM »
Greetings gang;

Hard times in the camp here in New York.  I have not turned my games on in about a month.  When I finally powered up my Fortune 1 9/6 poker game.  It came back on with 1000 credits in memory!  Pushed max bet a few times and it began to play them down.

1-How do I clear those credits
2-Is the cause of this situation battery related?  I would guess that the battery is about 2 years old.

Thanks experts
Ra

I hope that someone chimes in soon because it is getting worse.  I took the battery out pulled the mother board out and powered the game down for 2 days.  When I returned the game had 1800 credits in memory!  I ordered a new battery perhaps that will help but assistance is always appreciated.

Thanks

I will measure it right now.  The second glitch happened with no battery at all.  Voltage reading pending...

Drum roll,  battery .26 volts.  I did find a spare 523 battery.  I am going to put it in and see what happens.

Just a guess, but maybe when the battery gets low like that the data saved in the cmos memory by the battery can get corrupted or jumbled. When the machine powers up it reads the cmos memory and fetches the number of credits on the machine, if that info is corrupted then just about any random number may be mistakenly read for the credits info.

I think the 523 battery is a 4.5 volt one, should be written on the battery.

Thanks so much

I replaced the battery so I hope that solves one issue.

Is there a way to clear the credits or do I have to play down 1800 coins?  Yikes.

I hit the reset button both ways no change.

You could maybe clear the machine, but that'd probably take more time. Do those machines have a clear chip?

Ra, I know nothing about F1 machines, but I have a 1981 Games of Nevada Hold and Draw Poker machine that acted up in a similar style. It doesn't store credits, but you can put 1 to 9 quarters in and push the deal button or put 10 in and it automatically deals the cards. One day on start up it just started racking up coins in until 10 and then dealt the cards. I played the hand and immediately it started again. I finally pulled the board and the 15 or so Molex connectors and had a bad battery. Got the battery fixed installed the board and it worked..........for about 6 months. Then it started again. Badbaud suggested I unplug all those connectors again and reconnect and try that. Well while I had them all apart I used contact cleaner on the board connections and on the Molex connectors too. It's been over a year and it's still working perfect. Likely an oxidized connection. If the battery doesn't fix it, maybe something to try.

From reading thru the Fortune 1 manual it looks like the max hopper payout is 999 coins. Any win greater than 999 coins or pressing CASHOUT with more than 999 credits on the machine causes a HandPay event. So hopefully you can press the Cashout button, pretend to wait for somebody to bring you 1,800 quarters, then use the jackpot reset switch to restart the machine.

If your 5101 RAM memory (22 pin IC at lower left of board)  is soldered into the board you can remove all power from the board, including removing the battery then get a square of tin foil and short it across all pins on the RAM chip for about a minute. That will clear your RAM memory.

If the RAM is in a socket remove it and set all of it's legs onto a piece of tin foil or any non painted or coated metal surface, hold firmly for a minute or so, that also clears the RAM memory.

If the game screws up again it may be time to replace the RAM chip.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

I agree it could be the CMOS 5101 and also a static issue. I have seen it before and people tried to cheat machines with a device that created a static charge that on certain games, would add credits.

I remember when we first designed that game the engineer came in with a cattle prod and zapped it across the metal on the machine. The machine never faltered.
Much better then the previous design where the random number generated was designed using a pink noise generator, not a software solution like the F1.

We had to yank the test machines out of the casino because flickering florescent lamps or a static zap would display 5 aces on the screen.

Gents:

Thanks for the responses.  So I dont really jack up the game even more, what letter and number intersection should this be on the mother board?  A,B, C something.

I have been using dollar store dental picks to lift the chips off of the boards.  Non conductive and just strong enough to get the job done.
