S+ BATTERY DRAIN
« on: October 19, 2017, 10:17:00 AM »
there was an old post regarding this topic - but over 120 days - so new topic it is.
S+ 10 mhz board - battery last a week or less - 12 code - no damage to the board
swapped out with another CPU - 12 code in a day or 2

Swapped out the mother board - another cpu with new battery
12 code 1 week later

recap 3 different cpu - one different MPU - no visual damage to connections.

do visual damage to any connections going to the mpu or cpu

Are all the batteries from the same source and vintage?
What is the voltage of the batteries when installed?

I have 4 machines - 3 S+ and 1 PE+. I moved from PA to Canada in 2007. Machines were off, MPUs in boxes for over a year while I developed the basement.
Turned them on - not a single 12 among them. One gave me about a 12 a couple of months later, and one more about 2 years after that. Its been 10 years now and the other 2 are still going strong and the ones I changed have been running over 8ys.

Your experience is not normal.

I would suggest you have a short and given your swaptronics I would venture this is not a MPU problem.

My suspicion would be that you have a short. The first thing I would do is pull your Hopper and MPU and take a flashlight and make sure there isn't a coin or two wedged under the motherboard. This is the small fixed board that your MPU plugs into. You might also look for evidence that the motherboard was recently replaced or removed - there are usually paper washers between the mounting posts and the board and there is also usually a non-static  film under the MPU board that acts as installation. Either or both might be missing.

Another common place for shorts is that there is a bunch of wires that travel up from the mother board to the reel cage and then even into the candle. Its not hard for these to become stripped (and then shorted)by sharp metal edges.

Failing all this you might try removing all of the connectors save 1 on your mother board - plug your MPU board in - every 3 days if the battery is not dead - add another connector back. When you find the board has gone dead then you follow those wires to the area of the machine that might be shorted. Others might have better ideas than this.

i saw your post in the older thread -
not the boards - as i replaced cpu mpu as indicated earlier

has to be a short in the cabinet - will try removing components (hopper etc) long process -maybe easier to replace the wiring harness.

Attached is a backplane board layout. Unplug anything that is colored as not needed and see if that helps.
Also, when you pull the MPU board out if there is a small plug plugged in inbetween the two wide long connector near the back wall unplug it.

got the machine back at shop - checked the wireharness to mother board - J13 is attached - but that is attached in all my s+ machines - for PRINTER????  since when does S+ have printer option.
will put new battery on cpu - remove the hopper - disconnect the bv - the comparitor harness - check voltage on battery every few days.

Don't forget to look for rogue coins under the motherboard.

You said you replaced the MPU board. This is the removeable board with the CPU and the majority of the components.

The motherboard is the small fixed board that the MPU plugs into. It has many molex plugs connected.
I suggested that you should look under this board, and also ensure that you have insulators separating the posts that the board is mounted to and the actual board.

Barry, I had this on a couple S+ boards before. When I replaced the cmos chip it was good after that. I kept having to go to my cousins house and replace the battery about every 2 weeks. When I got his board back home I replaced the cmos chip and it has been in my personal machine for 2 years now. Hope this helps.
Thank Ya Thank Ya Very Much.

i replace the Mother board - and several cpu with new batteries - - right now I have a cpu board with new battery - I disconnected the bv - the cc - the J13 connect to the mother board - machine sitting - not running - so far the battery has not degraded with current connections.  If no change will connect J13 for a couple of days - then  BV then CC.   There are no coins stuck anywhere including the power supply - under the mother board.

The last time I had a problem like this it was the capacitor above the CMOS RAM.
But you already replaced the MPU board so I think it was some early attempt to use the battery to detect door open with power down.
Which would point to the card cage connector between the two large black connectors at the back of the backplane board?

Found the problem - i have 2 10mhz cpu boards - both have a plastic cover on the cmos chip - BOTH have corrosion - not easily noticed - what the purpose of plastic cover?  i replace the cpu with another cpu with no damage to cmos.
What the board was doing - run for a few hours - turn off/on and i would get a 61 error.  I checked the battery and there was no drop in voitage.

Great find. I replaced only the CMOS chip for my fix. Never looked at the old one for any corrosion. New item for the notes. Thanks.

Some stupid security measure to prevent shorting out pins on the RAM chip.
I unplug the whole assembly and pry the RAM chip out of the plastic cap and toss the cap.
