Home made slot machine
« on: October 25, 2015, 04:23:34 PM »
Well, I have 99% completed my Home Made Slot Machine. It will play over 400 different slot games including video slots as well as 3 to 5 reels games. You have the choice of either touching the buttons on the screen, pressing the buttons that are connected to simulate actual casino style machine and of course, pull the one arm bandit to make the reel "spin"

I started on the 10th of October and worked 3 days straight just to build the wooden cabinet. Once that was completed, I brought it in the house for painting. Once paint was dry to the touch, I started populating it with all the components I had to make it look like an actual slot machine. I bought the topper and pull arm from Kristel and am happy how it looks.

The whole thing is made out of one single piece of 3/4 inch plywood. It wasn't tall enough once I bent the plywood so I had to add 8 inches to each leg for a total height of 50 inches, 68 with the topper and candle. 19 inches wide by 18 inches deep at the biggest. Top part is 14 inches.

I changed every light in the button for LED style. The buttons are connected using a keyboard encoder from groovygamegear. I have 400 watt motorcycle speakers to provide lots of sound as well as a built in subwoofer inside the cabinet.

Everything is powered from a 700watt power supply. CPU is a E8600 with 8gb ram and 2 128gb SSD drives: one for the games and the other for Windows and backup.

I have a future connection for maybe a butt kicker when I finally get my slot machine comfy chair. Only thing missing is the 5 inch VGA monitor which will go where the piece of tape is covering a hole in the upper mirror.

I also added dream lights that chase and do whatever they want to make it more attractive. I love infinity mirrors so thought it would be neat to have them up and below the cabinet. It also matches the one we have at our bar.

All in all, it came to about $1300 worth in parts. A bit more than certain used machine but it will play over 400 of them so it's a bargain I think.

Let me know what you guys think. I did it as therapy from work. Helps me relax.

Man, I wished I had your skills at cabinet building.  Looks awesome.  How do you bend the wood?  I've always wondered about that.  One of my projects is to convert a Bally V20 machine into a V20/V32 for those dedicated games.

Thanks Rick.
To bend wood, there are 2 ways that I know of. By steaming (didn't have the proper tools for that) and by cutting strips. I made 64 cuts about 3/8 to 1/2 apart from each other. Then I simply bent it, nailed it to my half moon and Voila! The top portion of the slot machine.

I have added the rest of the pictures. Tonight, I'll be installing the 5 inch monitor at the top if I have a chance. Also chaning the power supply for the sound system as it draws too much current and the sound "clips."

Thanks guys. I didn't have time to add my 5 inch mini monitor on the top portion last night but once this is done, I will indeed post a video.
Last night I managed to finally make the keyboard encoder work so the push button and one arm bandit actually work.

Speaking of one arm bandit, is there a way to make it sound not as loud? I think because it is mounted on wood that it makes the Thunk! sound when pulled down, louder. I thought of adding rubber pad or mat between the inside part but the metal ring outside is still on wood.

That really came out nice. What software did you use for all the games? I have a few nice cabinets that I am wanting to do the same thing with and would love to find out what you did to set up the machine.
Would be nice to see the finished project in a video.

I too am very interested in what you have used for software.

Over the years I have built several mame (arcade) platforms but they were are all still too PC-ish. My best stab at this was with a Rasberry PII and Linux. Still 45 seconds of crab before going into an interface that can be exited to an operating system despite my hardening attempts.

My last project was to use a 19 in 1 Jama board. It turns on/off with a switch with no obvious boot, a simple menu or can be locked down to a single game if need be.

Really sorry for very late reply...
« Reply #10 on: April 29, 2019, 06:58:54 PM »
..mother in law has pancreatic cancer so I don't spend as much time anymore on my regular sites.
I didn't know there were answers to be given so here goes:
Since my last post, I have added the mini screen and I let it play a video of Las Vegas from the birds eye view. while it play, having dual monitor permits me to play the game on the main and play a video on the top one. Program I'm using for this is the win 7 Desktop video theme which lets you play videos on your background.
Whole system runs on Win 7, SSD for boot, regular HD for game storage. All the games I have have been bought from either Amazon, Ebay , Phantom EFX web site or from friends. All the slots from Vegas are on it. However that list is getting lower and lower as companies like IGT, opt for online game slots, not PC CD/DVD. The latest biggest one would be Alice in Wonderland.

I use a USB keyboard emulator for all my buttons. This gives me the option of either touchscreen, arm bandit or old school buttons.

When I get a chance this week, I'll grab a video of how it turns on to how it turns off.

I do have a few online game ares which lets me use all my buttons , arm bandit and touchscreen. Some sites are touchscreen only but the worst are the mouse only. I block those.

For those who have PINCAB's (like me! :rotfl: ), I haven't tried it but after reading Jay's post, I wonder if any pinball launcher would work? Only problem is some of IGT's games have their own launcher so it would be a launcher launching a slot . might get complicated but who knows. There are so many 3rd party launchers that I'm sure one can be adapted.
One more thing. Some games don't want to load at all. At one time, you could download the patch that would allow to play it on Win 7. Most games were meant at the time for Win 98 or ME. Then they mad them adapted to Win 7 but it breaks the older slots. And you can't download  from Phantom EFX anymore. some kind of copyright battle going on with them and other companies last I heard.
So again, sorry for the lateness. I'll respond as soon as someone has another question.

Thank you. I just wanted to prove that it could be done using wood and parts available to the common people. I still have to take a video and post it now that it is in fact, fully completed.

That's the problem when you have too many projects. Time becomes a factor!!! LOL

For those still around and following this thread, I am in the process of building a new pinball cabinet. With what I have learnt from the advancements in the virtual pinball world, might make me add a few upgrades on the slot machine. When I built the upper portion monitor holder, I didn't have a 3D printer so I had made it out of a piece of oak plank. Painted it red and that was it.

Another element I would like to upgrade are the flashing LED's. They are not the individual addressable type but the version above it. I can't recall what they are but they light up in groups of 3 LED per segment. I would rather have the really individually addressable ones. That way, i could use a Pi or NODEMCU to provide the flashing parts. All depends on my imagination I guess.  :drool04: :Scratch-Head:

Looks really sweet.
What software are you using ?

For the slot handle - are you using one from a real slot or did you get one that they use with the Pachilos ? any challenges with the mechanics.

For all my toys that I build from recycling computer parts bought for the many upgrades through the years, I always use Windows compatible programs. For the slot, I bought a lot of PC-ROM with slots games  on them. Many IGT, Williams and few others just to name the numerous amount of games available. There are a few that won't work anymore as I move away the Win95-98(ME) eras as Win7 is the limit. I have Win10 right now and haven't gone through the list since I did.

For the pinball, I have VPinMAME and Pinup Popper. I added a 42inch  4K instead of a 37 inch 1080p TV for the playfield. There are so many updates since the last one I built in 2007 that it needed a full rebuilt. I have kept a few things that still are usable in its form.

I built a virtual pin table as well. I used the same software, I have a Williams Diner (real) and the Vpin mimics it well.
I installed two solenoids under the table so when you hit the flipper buttons it knocks the bottom of the table for some force feedback feel.
I also have a Pin Pull that is tied into a Gyroscope that allows me to bump/tilt the table - its a usb device I found online.
I find it a bit flakey in its calibration and its behavior changes between games so its likely the software implementation of this.
