Cleaned the dirty edge connectors with a fiberglass pencil. Cleaned the .156 power headers. Cleaned dirty legs on 3 EPROMs and the 3 PAL chips on the CPU board. The logic probe revealed that IC58 and IC18 had stuck pins between them. The ICs and the 6116 RAMs tested good out of circuit. When flipping the DIPs the board suddenly came to life, but would quickly crash. Probing the outputs of the 74LS253 chips would cause the board to come back to life. Replaced all 4 74LS253 ICs on the input circuits and tested successfully.

Note: The 74LS253 chips were connected to the pins on IC58 and IC18 and were the cause of the stuck pins.

Model: Elevator Action
Symptom: Lines on screen, corrupt graphics, and locks up

Cleaned corroded ROM legs on the CPU, ROM, and sound boards. Replaced bad socket on IC54 on the CPU board. Replaced bad video RAM at IC106 and IC108 on the video board to fix the graphics issues. Board played, but the player and enemy sprites only showed the rear half of the character, doubled. Replaced a bad 74LS86 at IC86 on the video board to fix the sprite issue as pin 11 (output) was dead. Replaced a broken poly/foil cap on the sound board and tested.

Model: Elevator Action
Symptom: Stripped. Parts board. Please rebuild.

A parts board for a local museum was revived - it was severely stripped because it was dead.

Installed the following:
19x 2732 EPROMs
1x 24 pin socket
1x 93419 Bipolar RAM
6x 2114 RAMs
4x AY-3-8910 sound chips
5x .1uf poly film "chicklet" caps

This board didn't have the special encrypted CPU board so I programmed the ROMs with a mix of elevator and elevatorb MAME ROM sets. The elevatorb MAME set was for the unencrypted version.

Replaced a shorted chicklet cap on the CPU board to revive the game. Cleaned the power connector and the edge connector and tested.

Model: Bubble Bobble
Symptom: Resets

Replaced 3 badly corroded ICs, cleaned the edge connector and flipped all the DIPs to see it reset. That excluded the matching 74LS253 chips as a cause. Noticed the graphics stuttering before the reset line was activated by the watchdog. Checked the microcontroller and found its reset line was pulsing during the stuttering. Checked backwards through the circuit to the LS273 at IC55 and found that pin 11 (Clock) was floating. This was causing the LS273 to output spurious data. Replaced bad 74LS139 at IC39 to fix the reset issue. Replaced 2 corroded caps and a bad TL074 Op Amp at IC21 to fix the missing music. Tested.

Replaced a bad 74LS273 at IC55 and LS245 at IC56 on the main CPU and 4 other LS245s on the CPU busses. Board would boot and crash. Resoldered broken connections on the hybrid and diagnosed the MPU as bad. Customer had a spare on another board and still wanted this boardset fixed.

On the video board, replaced a bad RAM at IC74 to fix vertical lines issue. Replaced a bad 74LS257 at IC55 to partially restore the crosshatch test screen. Replaced bad 74ALS169 chips at IC65 and IC48 to finish fixing the screen display. Board would play, but had graphical corruption. Chased this one around a bit to discover the IDT6116-45 SRAMs have slightly different timing than the Sony CXK-5814-45 SRAMs. Replaced IC74 with a Motorola 2018-45 SRAM to fix the corruption.

Game would play but would lose sound. Chased this one around for a long while to discover it was simply a bad ribbon cable. Tested.

Symptom: Graphic corruption

The corruption made the screen look like an Atari 2600 - stretched out and blocky vertically. Horizontally, everything was OK.

Installed 10 ROMs to deconvert the PCB from a multi-kit to fix missing sounds. When the kit was installed, only the music played and all other sounds (shooting, dying, sliding down rope, etc...) were missing. Replaced bad 74LS173 at IC5 to fix the graphic corruption issue.

Board had attempted repair damage and damage where someone removed the hybrid module.

Replaced bad PAL at IC 43. Replaced 6 corroded sockets on the video board. Patched damaged trace under the ROM socket on the main CPU. Board booted to I/O error. Installed missing hybrid and patched multiple damaged traces. Replaced 3 sockets in the audio section, patched another bad trace, and recapped the audio section to fix intermittent audio issues. Model: Frontline
Symptom: Dead. Garbage on screen.

Repaired 3 smeared solder shorts on the back of the CPU board. CPU was stuck on /RESET. Replaced a broken 10uf tantalum and 10K ohm resistor in the reset circuit on the top board and tested.
I have too many hobbies! Electronics, gunsmithing, Miatas, arcade games, metal detecting, etc...
