Title: Which is better: IGT S+ or S2000
Post by: JethroP on October 22, 2020, 05:47:56 PM
I have an S+ and am familiar (sorta) with how it works.  I bought it under the recommendation of a seller who told me avoid S2000 because they were only made a few years, and parts are not as readily available as the S+. He said the S+ had a much longer production run, and therefore parts are more plentiful and cheaper.  I don't remember what else he told me regarding these two options.

So now I am considering buying another slot, either another S+ or maybe the S2000.  I've called around some sellers and today one told me avoid the S+.  She called it a "boat anchor" and said it was too old.

I'd appreciate some input here on this forum about these two models.  Good, bad, recommendations, and things to consider to help me decide.  Thank you.

I've been playing with S+'s for 20 years now, but I also own an S2000 which I like very much too.
Personally, I think it's definitely a matter of preference.

Some guys love their Game Kings for poker, while others love the S+'s for their simplicity.
There's so many different kinds of machines really!

No matter what, they are both cool platforms!  :cool_thumb_up:

S2000 parts are plentiful right now.  It is a more modern platform (although it is already 3 generations back from the current platform).  The S+ is a tank, very few things rarely go bad with them.  They have a pretty simple design, and thus also lack more of the bells and whistles.  Since you are already familiar with the S+ and it's limitations, I will list the things the S2000 can do that the S+ cannot.

1.  Backlit reels.
2.  Bigger number of sound options.
3.  Ticket In/Out functionality (with addition of a TITO system).
4.  More than 9 paylines.
5.  Digital payline indicators. (shows the numer of lines bet and coins bet).
6.  A display that actually says what the errors are as opposed to just numeric codes.
7.  Greater variety of game types.
8.  Relatively easy conversion between 3, 3 + 1, 4 and 5 reel themes.

I'm sure I'm missing a feature or two not listed here, but those are pretty much the bigger ones.  The S2000's are little more finicky, but once you get them going, they are pretty reliable, heck you can still find them in casinos after being off the market for at least 10 years.

If you are looking at buying from one of the big slot retailers, the S2000 is your only option. If you're looking on craigslist, I see lots of S and S+ and fewer S2000.  The S2000 is likely to be working correctly although there are plenty of older machines that are in great condition.

As previously stated, the S2000 has a lot of features that the earlier models lack. Since I have Bally EMs, I don't need a fake pull handle or coin capability on my S2000 so I converted it to TITO (only an S2000 has that).

I personally like the S2000s over the S+. More features packed into the same footprint, and I have not had an issue getting parts. If anything there are more S2000 parts than S+ parts it seems.

I have 3 S+'s parts are cheap.
If I had to buy a reel based slot  I would buy a S2000 to get all the new features - especially the sounds.

The S2000 can use all the S+ games...... even uses the same chips. There are S2000 versions of the games which again have better sound and features like the backlit strips.
The top glass and belly glass for the S+ is the same size as S2000 as well.
The reel glass is different - more cut outs for displays etc,

I also have a PE+ which is the video poker equivalent of the S+, it can play games like Double Diamond Deluxe but the graphics really are poor so I just play poker and blackjack.

My next purchase will likely not be a S2000 but game king to play all the cool video slots as well as the poker and other card games.

Ditto to all of the above answers.

As stated, both machines are very reliable and parts are still out there.

An S+ can be upgraded with a more modern bill validator to take newer bills and still have the coin handling equipment, which a lot of people like. The S2000 machines are capable of using the coin equipment as well, but you'll most likely have to install it yourself by purchasing the required pieces, as Brokers do not include it with the machines.

A note of caution though if looking for an S2000 on sites like Craigslist or Marketplace is to be sure the machine is operational with no errors. A lot of times the sellers will let them sit unused and the Varta Battery will die, leak and ruin the MPU Board if it was not previously removed. And good working boards are getting harder to come by.

So fully check the machine before purchasing it and don't fall for the "it just needs to be reset" excuse because it won't power up or boot properly.

If buying from a reputable vendor, then you'll have no worries. But also be aware that any upgrades you choose will add costs to the machine price. Items like Backlit Reels and Coin in/Coin out are not standard on most games.

But it's still completely your choice and if you find a theme that you absolutely love, then go for it.

But as far as customization goes, the S2000 would be a lot more versatile and be more exciting to play and modify. And you always have the option of adding/upgrading things as you go along. That way you can save some money on the initial purchase price.

Just my input, hope it helps.
