I am still learning about the em Bally slots but with slots in general, somebody's uncle's, friends cousin was an electrician which tried to get them going.  Be sure yours is wired for the correct voltage.  I think they have 110, 120 and 220 'lugs' on the transformer.  If they are melting, they would have to be incorrectly wired or dry if oil based.

Inspect the fuses and holders. Also that the wires are in the correct position.
Try removing the hopper and momentarily plug the machine in.
Observe the transformer for malfunction.

Typical schematic attached.

You shouldn't be frying transformers so quickly unless your fuses are either bypassed or the wrong fuses are installed.

The circuit to the hopper is now in an open state.
So not 100% the problem is in the hopper.
With that said.

1. See if the hopper motor/gears will rotate.
If not check for any debris or stuck coins.
2. Check the wiring at the motor and follow them back to the
Payout relay/switch stack. Look for any indication of burning.
Typically the white/blue and green or black wires operate the motor.

for a 955, the 120V fuse should be 3A, the 50V fuse is 5A and the 6V fuse is 10A.  These days all AGC fuses are rated 250V.

if you aren't sure which fuse is which, the 6V fuse has a solid blue wire on it, the 50V fuse has a solid orange wire, and the 120V fuse has a white/blue wire on it.

the only way to melt a transformer is having no fuse (miswired or shorted) or an absurdly large fuse in there.

unless you have a winner, the hopper motor, safety motor and override solenoid (if you have the old style hopper) aren't powered.

you could pull out the reels and stick back in the hopper.  If your problem comes back, you probably have a short on the hopper and maybe someone tried to find it using the old "wrap foil around the fuse and see what catches fire" technique.

post a pic of the fuses if you aren't sure.  If having trouble posting due to file size, you can email highest possible resolution pic to slotpics@cdyn.com.  A pic of the entire front of the game would be great too.
