Title: Changing games by changing MPU on Alpha video slot
Post by: Sunrise Side on November 15, 2016, 06:33:59 AM
I do not have a spare board to try this , but has anyone tried to change games by swapping in another MPU with a different  game on it? I'm trying to avoid a clear and a lengthy setup on this Alpha. Would this work? Thanks!  Tim

You would have to change the backplane as well.  All these gaming machines have an eeprom that backs up data from the nvram.  If the data does not match, you will get an error and the game will not start, thus requiring a clear.  If you save the mpu and the backplane, then you can switch them as you wish, but I will argue that swapping the backplane is a lot longer and more tedious process than just runnig the setup.  I didn't think the bally setup was all that lengthy to begin with, I usually do a setup under 1 minute now.  The only time it takes longer, is when a progressive is involved.  Consider it part of the fun in the hobby?
