Title: About to build a new game room
Post by: ramegoom on October 06, 2014, 10:42:48 AM
Looking for some suggestions. I just bought a house with an unfinished basement, 2800 sq. ft. It has 9 ft. ceilings, but ductwork and beams, so I can easily make it 8 ft clear.

So I'm thinking on spraying the ceiling flat black throughout rather than finish it. I want to put up walls throughout so I can install too many outlets, basically one big room. Except, I do want to build a "media" section with a flat screen and sound system, maybe 200 sq. ft. of it.

Also, the room has a concrete vault, about 40 sq. ft. with a steel door, so I am thinking on putting a hidden wall in front of it with a bookcase or something that slides out to access the room. There's a bathroom stubbed in already so I'll put one in, and a separate room that I will build into a bedroom with a closet. Beyond that, it's all open space.

I would like some advice on what to do with the floor. I first thought carpet, but thinking outside the box, maybe polished concrete? Carpet makes it difficult to move machines around, but it does keep it quiet, where concrete is more rugged. I have an antique Gandy pool table that I want to put in the middle of the room and plan around that.

Looking for some ideas and a bit of motivation here....

Stained and polished concrete, exposed ductwork, and black ceiling =  :cool_thumb_up: :cool_thumb_up: :cool_thumb_up:  If you want to get a feel for it, some of our local chain restaurants (I believe WingStop, and possibly Cool Hand Luke's?) are doing something similar, so I'm sure there are similar places in your area. It has a somewhat masculine, rustic feel, but works nicely with dark woods, area rugs (like under pool table?), track or recessed lighting, and leather furniture. The exposed ductwork can be left unpainted (if shiny aluminum), or painted black along with ceiling. To cozy it up a bit and tone down the testosterone vibe, I would choose some "foo-foo" throw pillows and textured rugs in the media area. Bedroom area should have an upscale hotel feel (think plush, rich fabrics and colors, high end carpeting and pad, clean lines, etc.).

Aww man, that sounds awesome. What an awesome project!

All sounds good except it might be a good idea to spray some type of paintable insulation on the ceiling before you paint it black to dampen the sound. Ever been in a P F Changs? Nice restaurant but noisy as hell. You can't hear yourself think in there. Just a thought...
Maybe consult with a company that does those kind of things for ideas

Good point cowboy...the restaurants that do this are all very loud. I always thought the bare floors contributed to it (no carpet to "absorb" sounds? Don't know if that makes a difference or not, but carpeted rooms always seem quieter than hardwood or tiled rooms).

We stained the concrete around our pool and it was awesome! Easy DIY project too!

You're right Roz, cement floors will make it louder and combined with a unfinished ceiling it can get really bad. Acoustic dampener will help on the ceiling and/or carpet, but maybe a carpet with a very short nap. It would dampen sound but still allow for moving heavy things around easily plus be easier to maintain than standard berber type carpets or whatever

The underlayment material under a wood floor over concrete does the same and deadends sounds somewhat. Actually pretty good as I did it.  Every thing rolls easy and moves easy.   Shut the door and no sound.  2-story, slab set up. 2700 sq. ft.  I do have 9ft. ceilings in game room though that are sheet-rocked with no pipes etc. to worry about.

Here's the space. Pretty clean ceilings for the most part. Good suggestions ^^The only thing I need to add is to make it a "walk-out" by adding a sliding door and a cement stairwell. I plan to do that in picture 1, all the way to the left of the windows, at the single window on that wall. It would work out well with the outside landscaping and provide an access to the outside of the house.

Very Nice set-up!  You can set up a full-blown casino/parlor in there, I like the space and lay-out, Lot's of potential there- :cool_thumb_up: .  We do like pic's!.

Oh, those floors are just meant to be stained...wow, I so envy you. I love this kind of stuff. Such a blank slate. Neat to see, or even imagine, what it could be transformed into.

I'm still on the "no flooring" team...muddle the sound some other way. A little echo is no big deal, that's manageable.  I guess it really depends on how big of parties you throw, lol! We didn't even address the vault yet, but you're on the right track I believe. Big piece of furniture that looks like it "belongs"....only on casters.

Jealous forsure.  That is one awsome space.  Theres some really good epoxy products out there for floors,  i see all types in restaurant designs and they do hold up well.  Im not a fan of carpets in basements, its still below grade and even if you don't have visible water intrusion you could have some humidity and carpets will smell over time.
I say you definitely need an large, easy access to move things in and out, and certainly should have a  storage and work space for  upgrades and repairs etc.

Id box in the poles, run power down with outlets on all sides and have machines around it.

Will you be adding a sub panel for just the basement space?

That's some good thought. I'm a fan of carpet only under the pool table, and concrete everywhere else.

There's already a sub-panel down there, very un-populated, so that's a good thing. AND, it has its own heating system...another big deal.

I was thinking on building in some structures for slot stands, maybe around the columns, so the ideas are starting to make sense.

The first thing you should do is paint the floor. This will cut down on any of the concreate dust that naturally accumulates. It also seals the floor which is important if you live in an area where radon is prevelant.
For flooring you can get engineered hardwood. Unlike real hardwood it won't warp due to the backing it has. For warmth I put down cork pads below.
You could also get casino carpet. Lots of the used places in vegas have miles of the stuff and lay it right onto the concreate without backing,
There is also all sorts of new tile styles - some that look like hard wood.
You might consider making two walk out entrances, the place I had was 3800 sqft in PA, and I had a walk out bathroom to a hot tub. Sure cut down on the mess when people came in/out dripping wet.
