EEPROM Error
« on: October 01, 2022, 11:21:40 AM »
I have an S2000 Double Red, White and Blue machine that was working fine.  After a few months of not being used I turned it on and it said "Call Attendant".  I opened the door and it showed "EEPROM error".  I assumed it was related to a dead battery which measured 2.8V, so I changed the main button battery.  When I powered it back on, I got a RAM error so I turned the jackpot key 4 times and then pressed the white button as instructed.   Then the "EEPROM error" appeared again.   I have tried to turn the jackpot reset key again and after 3 turns it retests the memory and gives the "EEPROM error ".  I have just replaced the EEPROM (U2) on the motherboard and am still getting the "EEPROM error ".  Any ideas on what to look at next?  Thanks for reading.

You might have to clear it. It you replaced the eeprom, your settings are lost anyway. Be sure you used the correct eeprom. Enhanced boards use 24c256, 50x boards use 24c16.
Quality doesn't cost. It pays.

Thank you for the reply.  I can try to clear it.   I will have to order chips.  The original EEPROM was marked 24LC16B so that is the replacement part I put in.

I received the clear and key chips and put the clear chip in.  When powered, the first amber light comes on and the second one just flashes.  Sounds like this indicates the EEPROM cannot be cleared.   I have already changed the EEPROM  (see picture of new one installed as well as both the new and old ones uninstalled).  At this point it seems to look like a motherboard problem or a CPU board problem.   Any other ideas?

If I were to assume it is a CPU board problem, are there any simple fixes to the CPU board?   I don't have any other S2000 machines to test with and a new CPU board is rather expensive.

Your MPU has quite a bit of VARTA electrolyte damage. Looks repairable tho. Check the pins on the MPU to motherboard connectors for bent ones. Other than that, it can be a bad SENET chip, or just trace damage.

Thanks for the reply.   I've confirmed there are no bent pins on the MPU board edge connectors.   I hadn't realized the varta electrolyte damage.  Could this be the problem?  It was working fine and then was not used for a few months and then this error started occurring.   The varta was removed sometime before I got the machine.  I have cleaned the area with a vinegar solution and tried to take a better picture.

You do have quite a bit of corrosion. Yes, the electrolyte will form a cap of potassium carbonate over itself and continue reacting with the copper, lead, and tin underneath over time. Did you look at the back of the board? It can find it's way through to there as well.
The corrosion can cause all sorts of problems.
