IGT Double Diamond Code 41 - Swapped Reels no change
« on: April 17, 2021, 05:49:11 AM »
I have an IGT Double Diamond from 89, I am not sure if it is an S model or not. I have ZERO experience with the workings of this machine as I have had it without problems for over 20 years. I am getting a code 41 but have swapped reels and 41 remains. I did disconnect the overflow solenoid last week due to it threw coins to overflow when hopper less than 50% full (hopper wire was good and connected). When I closed the door, it didn't register and I plugged and unplugged the door switch and it has worked until yesterday. The door switch seems to be working because each time I open and close the door it will try to cycle the reels but they each only move slightly then I get the code #41. So, from the pictures and videos attached. Can you help me identify my machine type, type of door switch (they don;t look optical), and how I can identify the motherboard. I would gladly pay for someone to fix my machine but no one works on these anymore. Thanks for the help and sorry for the newb questions. Ideas tips and suggestions welcome as well as a parts source.  https://vimeo.com/538066253

It is an older version S+ machine.  You probably have issues with the reel control chip, since the error does not follow the reel.  The S+ can control 5 reels, but 99% of the time, only 3 are used.  Most of us with some soldering skills, just swap out the bad reel control chip with one of the ones that are not used.  Almost all S+ MPU boards have at least 4 of the reel.  These are the chips in question:

U10 - Reel 1
U2 - Reel 2
U11 - Reel 3
U1 - Reel 4 (optional)
U3 - Reel 5 (optional)

You most likely have a chip at U1, you can desolder that one and swap it for U10 and it ought to fix your issue.  I don't think it is necessary to re-populate U1 with the bad chip.

Thanks, is there somewhere I can send the board to have it tested and the chip swapped if needed? (it is a 3 reel machine). I have ZERO soldering skills.

You are probably better off just buying a board then.  It would cost more in labor to have that done, plus the shipping back and forth.

How would I know what board to order and wouldn't I need to swap chips? I don;t mind paying to be done with it.

You need an S+ 10Mhz mpu board.  The only two chips you would need to move over from the old board are the reel and game eproms, which are pictured in the last photo you posted.

Would a clear chip help me in any way and I see many listed on Ebay, do I need one specific for a S+ Double Diamond or any S+ clear chip will work? Thanks again! Sorry for all the newbie questions.

How do I identify the reel chips that are not used (Reel 4 and 5) and mine is a 3 reel? Thanks

If you look at the mpu, the reel driver chips are clearly labeled.  U1 should have a chip on it, most boards have a socket at U3 that is empty.  Whichever reel is giving you issues, remove that reel driver chip and replace it with the one from U1.  Reel 1, 2 and 3 are used in your machine, Reel 4 is not used as you don't have a 4 reel machine.

You want to have a SET chip - used to activate the Bill Validator after a game change, and a Clear chip is a good purchase at the same time.

You rarely need either but when you need them you need them.
After a game change you will need to reactivate the bill validator - you can check out Ricks FAQs on the bottom right of the first page, in there you will find instructions on a game change.
You will also find the IGT game bible which will list all the games you can change your S+ into just by changing out the two aforementioned chips + glass/reel strips.
You need a SET chip to do this.

Assuming you do nothing to your machine,
Typically what happens is that the battery on your MPU board goes dead, your machine is already >20 years old - it will happen - error 12 shows up on the winner paid. You unsolder and solder in a new battery.
You then put the board in and get an error 61, You hold in the self test button, get a 61-1, close the door and the 61 comes back. Rinse and Repeat the 61 never goes away like it should.
The only way to get out of this loop is to use a clear chip which puts the game back to factory settings - you then need to use the SET chip to reactivate your bill validator.

There would be other things you will want to adjust after a clear like Reel Noise, Reel Stop Sounds, Jackpot Bell, Hopper limits / Credit limits but these all can be done using the white button (no chip required).

I had the board battery replaced about 5 years ago, no trouble since until now. I sent the board off for the battery replacement.
