Title: Convert Bally 5500 Quarters to Nickels
Post by: dougp62 on March 18, 2016, 05:13:25 AM
My Bally 5500 was a quarter machine that I want to convert to nickels. The only thing holding me back is that the comparitor often kicks out an error message in the display when feeding nickels in. After some research it looks like the weight needs to be changed. Does anyone have any info on doing this?

The error maybe caused due to the coin guide to large at the optics and needs changed to the small coin guide ? What is the error message?

The error code is 20 (coin in jam) even though I can hear the coin fall into the hopper. So it's not actually jammed but it doesn't currently like the flavor of nickels.

is the comparitor fully seated on all 4 pins? And aligned with the coin guide under the comparitor?

Could be dirty optics that are in the coin guide under the comparitor.

In looking at it closer I see that one of the upper pins is missing on the left side. I took the one from the upper right and moved it to the upper left, since that side is closer to where the coin drops into the comparitor. No change in performance.

As far as the dirty optics, is there a way to clean them?

Take the optic assembly out. Disassemble and on the optic board clean the senders and receivers with a dampened with just water soft cloth. Then there is a very small clear plastic prism triangle shaped, remove that and clean it also. Make sure the holes in the black plastic coin guide are clean.
