Title: PE plus fans
Post by: Badbaud on January 09, 2017, 05:26:56 PM
We got two PE+ machines into the shop to restore.
Someone had installed fans in the machines and left  them un-plugged.
I discovered why when I plugged them back in.
Some genius had installed 24VDC fans and they burned up.
Doesn't anyone realize that the PE+ games needed 24VAC fans?
Does anyone know where I can get working 24VAC fans?

Not ideal, but here is a fan and small control control with power converter. You connect the 24 volts AC to the control board, it makes 24 volts DC for the muffin fan. The control board also controls a small heater block, you can disconnect and remove it. The control board switches the fan on and off as needed, according to ambient temp, but that could be defeated so the fan runs continuously. I think the fan is a little over 3 inches on each side. If the fan is not the right size you could get the correct sized 24 volt DC fan and connect it to the little control board in place of the fan that comes with it.

I didn't think the fan was needed in a PE+ operating in a normal home environment. I've heard a lot of owners disconnect them to reduce the noise. Is there a concern about the mpu or other parts getting too warm?

Just a thought, you probably could add a diode in series with the 24 volts AC power wire that goes to a 12 volt DC fan and it would spin just fine off the rectified AC voltage. And a 24 volt DC fan might spin at reduced speed this way.

I am seriously thinking about putting a full wave bridge in line after my web search resulted in one company that sells one.... for $50 each from Mouser but none in stock until March.
I sent some feelers out to some fan companies, let's see what they say.

Jameco is another source for electronic parts, they may have what you need in stock:

Years ago I built a mame gaming system with a 26" tube TV - I installed 4 fans into the cocktail style chassis and got a thermocoupler to turn them on/off two of the fans sucked air in and two pushed it out. Worked really well to drop the heat. The only problem was the jet engine sound as the way the air bounced around in the cabinet. I may have wanted to install baffles. I took the low tech solution and increased the game volume.

I got a response from a company in Nevada that says they sell fans to all of the casinos BUT the first link they sent me for a 24VAC fan was a 115VAC fan. Hope to hear from them again on a 24V version. They do sell 24VDC fans for under $16 each. Good price.
