My Reel Touch Video Comm Failure Error is back. I have done the following to try and correct it.
Change Power Supply
Change stepper board
Change Communications card
Check for loose wires on hard drive
Pulled and cleaned all plug contacts with deoxit
Changed HD in it also
I don't have a spare video box to change out in this slot and finding one may be a chore.
Any body have any other ideas. Looks like I may end up parting this out if I can't find a top video box.
-
So it was working and crapped out again?
What if anything does the top box do as far as startup sequence?
-
It seems to boot up and run fine in the beginning and then screen reboots and display on door says Video Display Comm Failure. I had it do it too while I was setting it up. I have wiggled wires and unplugged and plugged them in. I think the problem is the top box. I don't have one to sub in it.
-
Where does the top box reboot. what screen is on?
-
And, have you checked the caps on the top box cpu?
-
It will reboot whenever. In other words you don't now when. You could be playing it or it could be just sitting -- then it reboots. I took a look at the board and didn't see any bad caps. I am puzzled with this one.

Did you remove and clean the memory cards contacts?
-
Only memory card on those is DDR2 ram
-
I don't know what you paid for the game but $200 to make it worth $1400 give or take might be worth it to you...
-
Yes the DDR2s are what I'm talking about.
-
Good point, every bit as suseptible to corrosion as a simm card I suppose
-
Ted,
I know you have a spare HD, have you tried using differant one. I had a reel Touch a while back that would do that type of sh t every once in a while before the HD drive went totally bad.
-
yes, I have put two different hard drives in it.
-
The caps don't always show distress. if the fan has an issue or the heat sink fins are full of crud the CPU will over heat and it will shut down on over temp. I've replaced 3 or 4 cpu's on all of mine. if you've had the fan off use plenty of grease when putting it back. heat is a killer.
-
Is the whole game resetting or just the top box CPU?
-
Take out the top box and set it up standalone with just the power supply. That will tell you if its the top box or some other spike from something else effecting it.
-
I will pull the top box and check the fan/cpu and let it run. I know I don't have a cpu here to replace the one in it. Thanks to all for the suggestions Just the top box resets on this
-
Remember the top box fan is powered by the supply from behind the reels so it will not run if you just use the top box supply.

I feel for you. I had 2 of these POS and there was never a dull moment. You never knew what to expect when you fired them up.
It took me months of advertising on Craigs list to get rid of them.Never again.
Good Luck :-)

Indeed--I could take the top off and change it into a S2000. I have several top boxes here. Seems ashame to do this but it is an option. I will keep working on it and see if I can find the problem for now.
