Title: SOS! My Fortune "21" Just Stopped Working! Help Please
Post by: RiseLikeRa on March 27, 2014, 04:08:33 PM
If it ain't one thing its another...  After playing about 100 hands of 21 and taking a 2 hour break with no problem.  I did some external cleaning and lubricated the bar that lock the door to the cabinet.

When I turned that machine back on OMG!!!  I got a screen with almost every message that the game has written across the screen in red Picture #1.  When I hit the resest I got screen#2  Coins go into the hopper but do not register.  I was just getting the thing to where I wanted it.

ANY suggestions would be appreciated.  Should I remove that main board and send it out?  Who do I send it to?  I cant tell you how depressed I am over this.  Did I pay an arm, leg and an eye for a 200 pound clothes hanger?

Thanks for the help
Ra

I don't know how or why but after sitting over night and offering up some prayer those crazy messages on the screen have gone away.  Thank you God.

Yes... re-seat the chips...especially the two at location C5 and  C7. Mine were causing blocks of color to just go white, black or just be a "block of nothing." And... note the three potentiometersin the back (around G, H 8 marked BL GN RD. Those get dirty and can mess with your colors. If you clean them, mark the setting on each one with white out or a fine point marker. Otherwise, your colors will be messed up. I discovered this as a result of your post asking for help on your machine winning too much. When I pulled out my board to look for a DIP switch (that doesn't exist), I noticed those pots for the first time! I cleaned them, put the MPU back in, fired the machine up and got missing colors back! Now it looks great. I thought it was just a problem with the monitor, but it was just dirty contacts. I'm posting your own picture here so you can see the numbered and lettered rows that show chip locations.

Short:

I am on the case.  When I get this game up and running 100%  I think that I will stand pat for a while.  That would make a nice array of Bally EM's and the two old video games.

Now I only have the COIN OUT/TIME OUT error code now.  I understand that can be cleared with the reset key.  When I get in I will reach into the cabinet and actuate the switch since I my game did not come with a working reset key.

I am glad that while trying to help me you learned something new yourself.  That's the way life works.  While you are providing a blessing for someone else you find yourself the recipient of a blessing as well.  Great karma on this site.  Since I have only a few moths experience with these games I have a millions questions but I will pace myself so I wont stress you guys and gals too much.

Stay well

The blue looking chip in the center of your board

is a one time use switch that you cut the connection

to open it. You can replace it with a standard rocker switch.

Not sure where you mean... also that is not my board... that's RiseLikeRa's board. But I'll pull out my own MPU and have a look.

My 21 game did the same thing again!  Screen showed every message it has at the same time in red and scrambled.  By force of habit I dropped a coin into the slot.  Everything cleared up immediately and the game played normally.  I still am not sure what caused this issue but as long as putting a coin in will fix it I am going to leave well enough alone.

So this ONLY happens when the game is not in play, correct? It sounds like it's whatever chip is responsible for the "GAME OVER" message to be displayed.
Just to further isolate this, when you put in one coin, does it clear up and, at the same time, still display "insert coin" ?
This sounds like some kind of idle mode issue.

Short thank you for your insight.   The condition seems to be only on initial power on.  Almost as if it happens when the game is powered off and it sits there and waits for me.  If the game powers on successfully then it seems to be good to go.  Process of elimination I hop.

The power up reset circuit is probably failing.

Bad:

Thank you for the insight.   I don't have a clue what that circuit is.  The condition happened 2 more times since my original post.   The first time I dropped a coin in by accident and the screen cleared up and all worked normally.   The second time the condition showed up I put a coin in on purpose to see if the game would work and it did.  So far so good I guess.
