Can I add a bill validator to this machine

You have an IGT Player's Edge Plus (PE+) video poker machine.

Your machine does support bill validators, so yes, in theory you could add one.  However, on the slant top machines, the bill validator was designed to go in the top box of the machine, which yours is missing:

For home use, you could possibly get away with adding a side-mount bill validator box to the side of the machine, and running the wires through the base of the machine over to the motherboard.  You would need one of the assemblies as well as the wiring harness to make that work.  Probably hard to find in 2016, but they're out there.  I'd start by contacting the vendors on the front page of the site to see if they have any.  You're looking for a side-mount bill validator box with wiring harness for an IGT S+ or PE+ (the same unit was used on both the S+ slots and PE+ video machines).

Also of note, the validators for the S+/PE+ only go so far in accepting newer bills.  None of them will accept the new purple-numbered $5 bills, or the latest $100 bills, nor will there ever be software to upgrade them.

Good luck!

You also need to be aware that the last bill available for these was the new $5. None of the new magnetic money is compatible.
This is due to the protocol of the machine and not the choice of validator you choose to buy. JCM / IGT are not making any new updates available.

Also if your getting a sidecar (side mounted bill validator) you will want to work with the vendor to make sure it is up to date to the new $5 as most of the older DBVs have likely not been updated since the units left the casino.

Here is a thread on the S+ (same vintage, same issues as the PE+ as it pertains to bill validators).

I had once found a protocol convertor. It used ID024 (S2000) and changed it to a variety of other protocols. This would allow the machine to use a newer validator with the old machine.
I have however not been able to find a price for it.

My screen has started to flicker would you know the cause of that

It could be a number of things......
1. Bad power transistor. There is a large high voltage transistor at the side of the chassis that controls the screen image.
2. Bad Capacitors. Over time electrolytic capacitors dry out. A CAP kit (a collection of capacitors) is often purchased and all the caps are replaced.
3. Dirty connections - Your monitor has a quick disconnect at the back of it. These tend to corrode over time. Cleaning them up with a white eraser helps.
4. Failing picture tube.... typically you lose a gun before the whole tube. When a gun goes you lose the capability of one color. The guns are RGB. This would not be a entire monitor flicker but a single color flicker.

Cetronix (sp ?) the maker of your monitor have a trade in program - you ship them your monitor they send you back yours fixed up or a replacement one.

Of course you can also buy a LCD monitor that is a drop in. Both Cetronix and Happ sell these.
