Title: Dead Bally S5500 MPU
Post by: mateo107 on August 11, 2017, 08:33:00 AM
Hi All,

So, I've got an older mid 90's REELS Bally S5500 board that I just cannot for the life of me get to work.

It had a dead psuedo coin button that was causing it to constantly "restart" the MPU every 5-10 seconds when I purchased it, plus some clear signs of amateur repair/soldering jobs done to it. I de-soldered the original button and put in a temporary button and voila it worked like a champ!

Then, I ordered a proper replacement button (the same as the others used on the MPU) and I think I must've broken another trace somewhere else during the installation, because once the new button was installed, the machine would go haywire, resetting, doing reel tests, sound tests, all sorts of funky stuff.  Well, I removed the new psuedo coin button again, fixed what I thought were all the broken traces and now I'm back to resetting every 5-10 seconds, no matter if I have it in MPU Reset/Clear mode or not, and whether I'm pressing the psuedo coin or any other buttons.  The only time it doesn't reset on it's own is when I hold in the reset button.

Anyway, I've had it with diagnosing this board, however, I cannot seem to find anyone that has replacements, anywhere.  You'd think with the commonality of these boards and their age, that many would be aging out of casinos and we'd be awash in supply parts, but ebay, google, and other searches have given me nothing.

What are my next steps?  I really and ideally need to revive this machine in the next week to two for a party that's going to feature an "Amusement" room with arcade games and a few of my slot machines.

I really don't have a lot of $ to put into this machine, as it is, I likely won't be able to make up for what I've spent on it, because it's a C or D quality (rusted chrome bits, etc.), so I'm looking for the least expensive option.  I don't really want to send the board out, as, I believe it had repair attempts done prior to my purchasing and that's why it gave me so much grief to diagnose.

Does anyone know where I can get an S5500 or what the procedure/process would be if I were to try and swap it into an S6000 board?

Thanks!

Your best bet might be to post a WTB ad here in the classified for a 5500 MPU Board. Your going to spend up wards of $100 for a replacement. As for installing a MPU from a 6000, it will not work. They are totally different.

Also, I may be able to fix on my own if anyone has a board schematic... i can start by removing the buttons (again) , fix the broken traces (I think) and then cross my fingers...

I've got a few manuals for it and the only schematics I found (I believe) were for the electrical components, buttons , lights, etc, and not for the board itself...

Thanks all..
