Pe+ 5x pay slot shows game but nothing works
« on: November 24, 2024, 11:19:43 PM »
Got this pe+ slot from friend that said wasn't working so figured I'd take it for free and dick with it. Got it home plugged it in and it worked. Being new to slots I started playing with settings adding progressive, change sounds and what not.Played for a couple hours and buttons quit working but light were illuminated. Checked with multimeter from switches to the board connection and found 0 breaks. Unplugged it and came back next day to it working. Played for an hour and boom nothing works. Game is still on screen but now buttons aren't lit and bill acceptor isn't lit. Go into test screen and buttons aren't acknowledged but bill acceptor lights up and is acknowledged until I back out and close the door. Both boards don't show any type of burn or damage and battery is good. Not sure what to look for next. I ordered a mother board hoping to fix it but it hasn't arrived yet. Any help is greatly appreciated

Welcome to NLG. PEs are great machines.

Intermittent issues like this are tough so the first things to check… hoping for an easy fix:

Remove the board and inspect the connector pins. Use a good light and a magnifier. It’s possible there is some oxidation causing the jump to be weak. I think the lamps use a separate ground pin on the so if this is the problem it makes sense that the bulbs would keep working.

Carefully lift and re-seat all ICs that are in sockets. If you see any that are oxidized or corroded try Deoxit, let it sit and re-seat the IC a few times to swipe the pads. Best practice is to replace any socket that has indications of corrosion. You never know what you will find underneath.

Measure the voltage on the backup battery and inspect for leakage or trace damage around the battery. Neutralize any sign of corrosion.

The good news is that K-Lar has a testing station for these and they are pretty robust. Once repaired you can expect many years of life.

Please keep us updated on your progress. Congratulations on a great “free” deal.

I just re-read your post and noticed you said the button lights did not work. Im leaning towards an IC that is missing logic. Start with my suggestion and we will go from there.

Chris

Thanks for the advice. I've cleaned anything i found to be dirty which wasn't much. Battery looked like it was replaced at some point, tested at 3.68 volts. Board is spotless. Gonna trace things as far as I can with multimeter and see if i find anything there. I have a new back plane (cpu) and clear set chips on the way I will swap it out and clear and set mpu when it shows up and let you know if she's fixed.

So i bought another pe+ machine but it has the upper mpu tray and the other machine has left side mpu tray so can't just swap without transferring the board. I swapped boards and game worked fine in the new machine. Guessing only thing left really is the mpu board transformer and back plane. Otherwise I will be pulling wires looking for shorts.

You might want to leave the original board in the new machine and the new machines board in the other chasis.

Leave both machines on overnight - the intent is to see if the problem follows the board or the chassis.

The edge connector on the original board is my suspect spot. Clean it well with a white eraser and if you have contact cleaner rub some on both sides of each pint on the connector with a q-tip.

Well after swapping boards back and forth and unplugging and plugging shit. I got it working. After I swapped a few times and failed I unhooked the bill acceptor which I had done before but this time I unplugged it and my buttons were being acknowledged.  Plugged it back in and boom no buttons. So unplugged bill acceptor and then it wouldn't take coins. Power cycled a couple times and then it started taking them. Got set chip waiting at post office. I'll try to set bill acceptor up again tomorrow.

What bill acceptor do you have ?

The oldest was the DBV145 - these were commonly replaced with the dbv200.
The 145 head can be swapped out for a 200 with 1 screw. Simple … however…..
The power supplies are also pin identical but the 145 power supply does not have the amps to reliably run the 200 head. Check your power supply. The 200 ps has vents and/or fins the 145 is a sealed box like a power supply for a laptop.
