Title: Williams 40x High Speed Slot Machine Lower Power Supply F1 blows
Post by: mantaramian on November 24, 2016, 07:46:55 PM
Greetings,

I just picked up a Williams High Speed Slot Machine what appeared to be at first a simple lower power supply replacement.

After pulling out the lower power unit and checked the switching power supply I found was the F1 fuse blew, I replaced the fuse, checked the bridge rectifier and the 7805 (Heatsink Transistor) All checks out good. I bolted it all back together and stuck it in the game again a humm came threw the speakers and then stopped.
The F1 fuse blew again.

Any ideas?

Happy Holidays,
Mike

No problem, I think one of the moderators can edit your post, or you can, just look for the word "modify" in green in the upper-right area of the post and click on it. That will open up the post in a modify or edit mode, you can then remove any references or commands having to do with font size or font style or typeface. Then save the post and it should be ok.

On the F1 blown fuse problem, have you tried disconnecting the cables from the output side of the lower power supply to see if it is something connected to the power supply causing the problem? All of those white molex connectors feed power to different places in the machine, maybe one of them has a problem. Do the fluorescent lites stay on when F1 blows? If not you might have a bad ballast or lighting problem. There are 1 or 2 fluorescent lites behind the belly glass, one in the top box area and a smaller one on the inside of the door near the top edge to light the spinning reels. All of these have a ballast transformer and a starter (small chrome looking cylinder can). Since they are just for lighting you can disconnect them for troubleshooting purposes.

That is my next step, the problem i am running into is my bench is about 30 miles from the machine. Since it was a calm day today I thought I would first ask the community if there were any suggestions.....

I will post my findings...

I forgot to mention, if this is a dotmation machine the dot matrix box mounted in the top box area also gets its primary power of 115vac from the lower power supply. There is a 3 wire power cable bringing 115vac from the lower power supply to the dot matrix box as input to the power supply board inside the dot matrix box. That dot matrix power supply board often fails. It only produces 12vdc for use by the dot matrix controller card and the dot matrix display, all inside that metal dot matrix enclosure box. If the dot matrix power supply board fails people usually install an inexpensive 12vdc power supply nearby and connect it in place of the failed dot matrix power supply. Or they run a couple of wires from a 12vdc source in the lower cabinet. I haven't looked at it in a while but I think a 2 amp 12vdc source is all that the dot matrix box needs.

I don believe there is an additional power supply in the head. I did check the switching power supply in the box, all is good there.

I am just chasing down why F1 is blowing.

You're right, the WMS High Speed was not a dotmation game, so there isn't a dot matrix display with its power supply in the top box area.
