Title: 3 reel mechanical nickel slot
Post by: lhill on April 05, 2017, 08:52:20 PM
I have a 3 wheel mechanical slot machine that the wheels have slowed down to a crawl. About 1 - 2 seconds to turn. Any place I should look?  It came from Crystal Bay when they were still in business. I hope someone can set me in the right direction. I am a newbe to the slot world and need all the help I can get.
Thanks ,
Larry

Hello, you may want to post the make an model of your game. A photo may help too. There's a lot of great minds here but, they will need some more info to be able to help.

I will try and get some pictures in the next few days. There is no marking about who built it. It just says Smith's North Shore Club, Crystal Bay Tahoe. It use to work, but we don't play it that often and I suspect dust or something needs oil. I just don't know what to oil and what not to oil. Thanks for your quick response and I will follow-up with pictures.

Most mechanical machines work the same.  Inserting a coin unlocks the operating system.  Pulling the handle unlocks the reels and causes a foot to kick them.  The reels will spin for a variable amount of time as determined by a clock motor, after which arms will drop into sprockets on the reels and stop them.

Take the back off your machine, put a coin in and pull the handle.  The foot should kick the reels, causing them to spin.  With your finger, stop the blade on the fan of the clock motor.  Then try to spin the reels by hand.  If they are sluggish, the grease in their spindle has caked up and needs to be cleaned and replaced.  OTOH, if they spin free, the spring for your kicker may be bad, or something on the kicker's foot may be worn, or something along the mechanical chain of motion that causes the reels to be struck may not be working right.  You just have to look carefully and follow the chain of motion as the handle is pulled.

(That's the best I can do without being there to show you.)

It appears that most parts are just worn out. A lot of metal filings in the bottom of the case. I think this one has seen better days. I am going to try and sell it as is. Thanks for all the help guys.

Can you at least post a picture of this machine, inside and out? We'd LOVE to see it even if you sell it.

You have a Pace open front machine.

Because they aren't pretty and have no jackpot, they aren't worth that much when they do work.  However, you have an advantage of living where you are.  People in California who want a slot (or in this case a fixer upper) come to the Reno/Carson area thinking this is where to find them.  When they get there, the discover they aren't as plentiful and cheap as they expected.  Having invested all that driving time and money on their trip, their egos won't let themselves go home empty handed so they are willing to pay more than a machine is worth, just to have something to bring back and show their friends.

Place ads in Craigslist using the keywords slot machine and slot machines.  You should get a lot of responses.  If you are lucky, you may get $600 or $700 for it, not working.  The thing is, the picture of the inside doesn't look that bad so I have to ask myself, is it a piece of junk, or do you simply feel it's junk because you don't know how to make it work?  I've picked up absolute treasures for pennies on the dollar, simply because the owner didn't know how to perform a simple fix and thought he was getting rid of trash.

Thanks for the input. I am a computer guy with a pretty good working knowledge of machanics, but looking at the springs and wheels does not look like something I am willing to take on. I will put it on Craigslist for $450.00 in an as is status. Maybe I will get lucky with those California people. I moved to Carson from the bay area and never looked back.
