Title: Lobstermania 5 reel with top display
Post by: Badbaud on February 09, 2019, 02:15:14 PM
Got one into the shop for repair, changed the main battery and door battery (it was leaking).
The game initialized to "waiting for top display".
Found the top power supply was dead and ordered another one, waiting for delivery.
I was told the top unit needs a keyboard to get it up to fully working.
What kind of keyboard, USB or old XP style plug.
Once the keyboard is plugged in what instructions do I need to type to get the top unit to communicate with the bottom board?
What other problems may I run into?

If the battery in the top box is good, you won't have to do anything. Keyboard is PS2 (old). You could have used on old style ATX (PC) power supply and just spliced the small plug to one the small plugs on the power supply. mounting it to the mount plate is a little tricky. you have to make a bracket of your on design.

Thank you for the comments. Didn't know there was a battery on top.
PS mod sounds like a good plan "B" I'll see what the one I get looks like.

The top box is run by nothing more then a DFI brand PC motherboard. The battery is a the same as in your PC, a CR2032. The p.s mod is also a quarter of the price of the IGT one. An ATX p.s is about $20.00 and will be 300 or 400 watt with a real fan, not the wimpy 200 and the piss ant fans from IGT.

The one we ordered was only $20 but I do have some ATX PS at home I'll bring to the shop.
What do I have to dismantle to get to the top battery?

Here is the link on using an ATX power supply.
http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=1272.0 (http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=1272.0)

The battery is in the top box there are five screws to remove to open the top box. Three round head Phillips  and two flush mount Phillips on the top and bottom. Usually the flush mounts are discarded.  Open the top box at the hinge and replace the coin battery. Plug in your ps2 keyboard in the side of the top box. Turn on the power and keep hitting the delete key on the keyboard. When you get to the bios screens set the time and date. Then save " optimized defaults " and save . Shut down remove the keyboard and restart. That's it.

No, cd is just for factory loading

What specific fault in the top box would cause the problem?
The CD light blinks on then off, the small fan mounted to the CPU is not spinning, I can feel the hard drive spinning.

Assuming you have a good power supply.
Are there any LEDs on the motherboard lit up?
I would reseat all connections on the top box motherboard .
Make sure CPU fan is good. If fan is good and no LEDs are on, the motherboard is probably bad. It would also do this if the bios chip is missing from the board. Post a picture of the motherboard.

If the CPU fan is bad (hard to turn is one indicator), Then it's likely the CPU has over heated and is bad. They can be hard to find, but I've got some on *bay. If the CD light flashes, likely good although one or more of the voltages could be missing. The power supply is the same as ATX supply. 12 volts, +5 & -5 volts.

Is there a small square chip under where all of the wires go to the motherboard. That is the bios chip the wires are blocking the view in your photos.

I'll check on Monday. My wife is hiding my keys so I don't go to the shop tomorrow.

Here is the MPU out of the box. It looks like the MPU got very hot.
Went on Ebay and ordered another CPU board, even though it looks the same as the one in the picture is there anything I need to swap out of the old board to get the game up?

The memory sticks and that MPU chip which you probably should assume to be bad. Should be moved over. Also the bios chip if it was a bios 1 Larry.  I would have tried the MPU chip first based on it's looks of overheating and the fan not working.
Let us know what happens.

Progress so far.
Top display comes up but touch board is not working.
Is that a separate board we must purchase?
Top LED border frame flashes briefly but does not animate.
Top displays "call attendant".
Bottom display LED display mismatch, currently running a KEY17 to see if we can set that option.
Next would be entering the 4 denominations.
All that was lost when bottom board battery was replaced.

Ran a key17 and got top touch to work and cleared LED display mismatch problem.
4 denominations are set and it's touch display works.
Final step is to get the bill validator to fire up and work, any suggestions on how to clear the CRC mismatch?

Ran a Key 45 and did a netplex auto cinfig.
The game is up and running.

Upper touch panel reports working but played the heck out of the game and never got a bonus round to see if it works in normal game play.

With the machine up and running try calibrating the touch screen  in the set up for the top box (8) and see if that clears the message on the next boot cycle.

So the problem was a bad top box motherboard?

Yes, it was a bad top box board, we put the original top box MPU chip into the board we bought and everything came up  including top screen calibration.
