Title: Problem booting.
Post by: SlotMechanic on March 05, 2014, 11:59:39 AM
Hey guys. After working on my progressive display I booted up my machine. It comes on, and the vfd displays "Netplex link is down...." for about 2 seconds, the printer is herd coming on...and it then process to go into a repeat mode, everything goes off, then the vfd displays the same thing and the printer comes on again....and so on... What I've done in the past is just shut it down, pull the mpu out and reseat it...and turn it back on and most of the time it works......yesterday was different...it didn't want to work at all....so I decided to do some investigating....I unplugged my printer...and try to boot it up...and it went on fine......so I thought the printer was my problem....so to be 100% sure I plugged it back in...and sure enough it booted up fine again....so I continued with my progressive programming....I needed to turn it off again to undo some wires...and then I turned it back on....same fricken crap....won't boot....I pulled out the power supply...reseated it....no change...I checked all connections...all were good...I pulled the mpu and checked all the chips...all were good..i put in the mpu again and tried turning it on...and now its working good......we will see tonight when I turn it on again.

Maybe a video of it doing it next time will help?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. If I need to do some electrical testing, let me know..i am no beginner in that....

Thanks guys

Tom

Had the same problem one time. Seating the mpu or cpu sometimes it does not go all the way in. looks OK but is not.
I always push it in a little harder if I am having trouble booting up.

If you have another machine, I would try swapping out the power supply.  Weird bootup issues like that is very often a power supply issue.

Well, i think i have a bad or about to fail power supply.....its worst and worst now..it will take about 10-15 on and off boots to get it finally to boot up.....anyone have a power supply?

Thanks guys...

Well, i've replaced the power supply with a known working one....it till is doing the same thing....so i think the ps is out of the qeustion now....i've been testing everything by unpluging the displays/netplex items.....and trying to boot it up cold.....maybe a faulty item is causing my issues....is this a good process of elimination?

Anyone thing the mother board could be the cause?....

That is always a possibility, when it doesn't power up, what is the LED pattern on your MPU board? (which lights are one from top to bottom)

Rickhunter,

Heres a video I made last night showing the lights on the board.

Let me know what you think...

Well guys, I decided to take out the power distribution assembly....after taking off the covers for it, I immediately noticed a cap that looked to be domed on a board in there....I really don't know what this board powers....all that was connected to it was a smaller 2 wire connector....fortunately I had bought some 10v 1000uf caps in the past so this morning I replaced the cap....after taking it out and testing it I was only getting 13 uF on my fluke...it wasn't charging or discharging either....so I can be willing to bet the cap was shot...

In the pic of the board, its the cap right behind the connector on the right...

I will cross my fingers and hope this was my issue...I really don't want to keep throwing money at it.....

Thanks.

Tom

That board powers the tech light (AKA branding iron) and the comm board. I don't think that is going to help but you never know.

That could have been caused by the power supply going bad and then causing a logic failure. I had something very similar happen to a barcrest I have and I tried a different cpu and it came right up.

Just so I am clear....is the mpu the board in which you pull out to put the clear and key chips into...and the cpu is the board that the mpu slides into that mounted on the back side?

Thanks.

Also, would that green battery problem give me this problem too? It seems when I leave the machine on while its doing this for a couple of minutes...then power it down and on again, it boots up with no problem...maybe its taking the time to recharge itself.....I will have to test it tonight.....

The CPU/MPU board are the same in the S2000, it's the board that is in the tray you pull out and contains the software and the big Intel i960 cpu on it.  The board mounted on the backside is called the motherboard or backplane.

i have seen this problem a lot in the enhanced boards. haven't found a 100% sure cause for it but have suspected its a power problem. let me know how replacing that cap goes. last resort is replace the mpu(i have done this on 4 machines).

Well, no luck after replacing that cap..... :banghead:

Iam going to try and get a motherboard/backplane and start with replacing that first...if that doesn't work, then I will move onto replacing the board with the cpu on it....

On the bright side, atleast I will have spare parts for this thing....

Tonight I am going to take that backplane board out and inspect it..

vTyler - When you say you have replaced the mpu to fix the issue, did you replace the pull out board AND backplane board, or just the backplane board? And I agree with you about the power problem.....whats weird is that after I let it say on for a minute or two or after I turn it on and off several times, it will boot up normally and I can plan it all day...it seems something is heating up and then working?

But anyhow, just want to thank everyone's help on this matter.....hopefully I can get a root cause figured out...save some headache for other people that run into this problem...

In one of your other post you said booting it up cold . Is this in a unheated room or a cold room as machines some time will not start up  when the room is cold ?   P.B.

Its in my basement were its about 65 degrees....when I first got the machine, for a good couple weeks after, it booted up everyday with no problems...

the board with the cpu on it. what amp rating is on your power supplies. i have seen some higher amp power supplies in video slots, but i dont have a broken machine to see if one of them in place of the low amp s2000 psu will work.

vtyler - the rating on my power supply are, 13v=16.15A, 25v=8.4A, 300W max

The the problem still is going on.....but heres alittle more info...I have found out if I turn the machine on for the first time, and let it blink the LED's on the board 15 times, then shut it off, after I turn it back on, it has booted up normally everytime......Weird.

I'll be looking for a mpu....

I don't think it's a power supply problem. I think the problem is related to the MPU. I would suggest replacing the rechargable battery before replacing the board.

I should replace the battery even if its giving me 3.6xx volts when i test it?

Also, how about the button battery on the board...what would happen if i where to take it out and replace it....any memory setting erased?

Thanks.

I am just saying that is what I would do if the board's model number ends in 1270. Proms and simm card will be mounted on a daughter board.

Button battery is fine and the sound set up would have to set back to preferred if that is what you are currently running.

EDIT >>>>>

if the battery is removed then the preferred sounds needs to be set back up .. but this stuff below needs to be done first

machine displays .. ram error or call attendant
open door .. turn jackpot reset key four times
press test switch in for 3 seconds on mpu
close door

then set the sounds back up

Ok, thanks for the tip...my boards model does end in that.

Just retested my battery and it's at 3.586v before boot up...

i tried the batteries on every machine i have seen this problem on it has only ever worked on one board. i have heard that it could be caused by one of the main spartan fpga chips.

Well, some more weird things...I booted the machine up normally...to get all the credits out....I shut it down and pulled the board out and metered the battery...this time it was at 3.4v (after getting a reading before doing anything with the machine at 3.5v) .....??? I proceeded to put my key chip in...and ran the machine for about 15 minutes...shut it down to put my regular chip in and it was at 3.68v......I might just try the battery just incase...plus its cheaper then a board....

definitely try that battery first, maybe its not the batteries tho maybe its something in the charge or detect circuit for the battery? what does the green one actually do?

i understand that the battery is there in case the power on the machine goes down and then the door is opened it should set off an alarm of some type

and I know it will cause the board not to work .. usually the red led blinks
