Title: Broken eprom leg
Post by: Jimise on March 09, 2014, 05:37:15 PM
I have a GK Deluxe Memory board that allows you to use 3902 games on an 044 board.
Anyway, today I discovered that a leg is broke off in the boot chip slot.(upper left in picture)
I was wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem, and any suggestions on how to possibly remove the broken piece.
Thanks everyone!

It must be pretty small.. or I am getting old. I'm not seeing it in the picture. Do you have any dental
tools, like a metal pick? Might be able to latch onto it and work it out enough to grasp with a fine pair
of needle nose.

Yes the holes are very small, and the broken piece is hard to see. It is the last hole at the top of the pic,
all the way to the left. it will take something very small to get it out!
Thanks!

You can use a small drill bit to remove, test fit it in other hole so you don't inlarge hole, most hobby stores have small drill bits , eprom legs are soft metal and should drill out easy, good luck

Jim  I think Ticker is correct and a drill bit will be the ansewer, but be very carefull or your going to have a broke drill bit down in the hole along with the broken leg.

This tool I would use is called a "tip cleaner" and it's used for cleaning the tips on a cutting torch, You can find them in welding supply store for about ten bucks. It's hollow and has about a dozen different small drill bits stored inside the handle.

You could try using one of your Wife's small sewing needles, heat the tip using your cook stove and bend the tip. Slide it along side the broken leg rotate it a quarter turn and try to lift out the broken leg.

Now that all else has failed, replace the socket. ( I have some new ones if you need one )

Any small sharp tool will work

Just stick the sharp point into the broken IC leg and gently pry it up.
it might be easiest to work it out with the tool instead of grabbing it with tweezers or needle nose pliers
Just hold the board so the leg falls away from the board.
You do not want it falling someplace where it can short something.

Thanks for all the replies everyone
Well with a combination of small sewing needles, Every 5 minutes x about 6, I kept bugging my wife, "do you have another needle?"
and a very small drill bit, I think it went to an old dremmel tool, I got it cleaned out and I am playing creature from the black lagoon like a champ!
Thanks again!
Jim.
