Title: Thread Transfers
Post by: Joeylc on February 09, 2014, 09:03:18 AM
Tacman I moved your pm to an open topic so all can see what is going on...
And hopefully volunteer to moderate a topic and or help / Move topics just like your doing>>>

>>> Great Job Dan it looks good all the important stuff with out all the fluff-junk post to go along with it.....

:drinking_too_much: "Great taste, less filling"   :drinking_whiskey:

Joey, I started transferring important problems/answers from the Gamemaker topic. I have been trimming the threads to the basic questions/answers and supporting docs/pics to cut it short. If that is OK, then I will continue with the WMS video topic next, since I am the topic moderator for those two. After that, I will let you know what topic is next. Maybe a post listing topic transfer and the responsible member, so no overlap occurs. If you want me to hold off from transferring let me know.

 Dan (tacman)

If you want to mod a topic post which one you want and we will add your name to it.   :hail:

If you are going to move topics please post which one you are working on so we done get an overlap.
  :stirthepot:

And as always  :thank_you: :thank_you: :thank_you: you guys are the core/glue that makes NLG what it is.....   :sherlock: Here's to you. Cheers.........      ..

I'd be willing to Mod a topic I know something about, like in the IGT platform or whatever. Would need to be trained a bit though I guess. Also would be glad to help move threads if you tell me what and how to do it. Not a computer guru, but not out of the sludgy part of the IQ pool either

Hey Guys, this transfer is a bit of a hassle because of the editing, but here is how I do it and it seems to work for me:
I open two windows, one for the old site and one for this site. I review posts in the old site that have important info/pics or specific problems and hopefully solutions. You create the same name thread in the new site topic and then you then highlight and copy from the old site and paste into the new site thread. The highlight is accomplished by left click mouse button and hold over text you want to copy then release left button. Then right click mouse button, choose copy and then go to new site thread topic, right click and choose paste.
I also copy over pics and attachments, these you will have to right click over the pic or attachment file and save them on you computer (I have a folder on desktop). You can then attach them to the thread on the new site. You can only attach 2 pics/attachments per post.
Please review the posts in the thread and cut out the BS, and only repost the problem/solutions. I add the member ID to the post if it isn't already there so the member gets the credit for the info. You may have to "Modify" the post after you first post it because the format pushes everything together. Take a look at the threads I transferred in Gamemaker or WMS video to get an idea.
I do not transfer any problem post if it does not have a successful resolution, this would not benefit any members searching with the same problem. Let them repost the problem on the new site and someone may now have the answer.
Thanks for the help!

Tacman, in reading through the topic forum on the old site I notice, especially in the S2000 section, there are a crapload of topics to go through, around 2500 in that one and a lot of it is repetitious. The bypassing door optics topic for example is a very long thread, but could actually be eliminated with a new sticky topic titled correctly and one reply with a diagram. Do all the "conversational" or "debate" type replies need to come with it? It doesn't seem necessary, to me, to transfer 4 pages of replies for what is really a straight forward simple answer. I know you stated you glean the best info from a topic when you move it, just wondering how much of the tree can be left behind
Title: Re: Thread Transfers
Post by: Tacman on February 11, 2014, 11:15:56 AM
Trim the thread as much as possible, if it is just a problem and solution with fluff in between, then cut it to the quick. Just remember though that in some problems, there may be different avenues to check (if viable), try and put these in as well as the solution. What may have fixed the problem for the original poster, may not work for someone searching the topic, one of the other possibilities may be their solution. Also try not to copy and paste links to other threads on the old site as a solution, if the site crashes or is eventually closed, the link would be useless.
My condolensces, the S+ and S2000 topics are both gonna be a BEAR to go through and transfer, Good Luck!

You could look through the forum index tab, if there is a topic you're interested in and there's no moderator name in red, let Joey know the topic so he can assign it to you and then have at it.

General instructions and a few tips are in messages I posted in this thread a couple of messages up. It may get a little frustrating but once you get the hang of it, it will get easier.

I'm good for any.  previous Bally, rants and raves etc.    I have been crazy busy with my day job lately, but will begin to transfer posts as soon as I can.  Obviously only meaningful posts.
I assume we are leaving the posts on the old site also.

It's good to see so many hands helping with this.   :applause:

Will we be doing any of the Rants, eBay, Craigslist, Classifieds? I'm kinda busy this week, but could really put some time in in the upcoming weeks. Just let me know if we think of some topics not covered. I'm a nerd and like doing this kind of thing.

Tacman..... I changed the Max number of attachments per post to 6 for now..    let me know if it helps..
Title: Re: Thread Transfers
Post by: Tacman on February 14, 2014, 06:13:55 PM
In some instances it will. For those transferring, remember you can't attach pics to a certain text unless you do it as individual posts. So if you put in the original question and a list of replies and a group of pics, it may be confusing to the reader trying to determine what pics are for which post. I would seperate these into individual posts for clarity.

I moved S2000 progressive (multi-denom) over
I left out chaff of the posts (since many say it works
As I get a chance I will move other major S2000 threads over and once you get the Homebrew EFT, Player Tracking, TITO area up I will work on it.
I am only gong to move the good topics with answers and will give credit to each poster if they are current member on old site.
Up to suggestions could do it like this
Question in subject and first paragraph and best answer in same post (with proper credits I don't plagiarize

I can insert pictures inline while creating or modifying a post just fine but docs show up as links to original site.
Which I am afraid may disappear at some point and will affect many posts that are moved over.
I did notice that some pictures also link to original NLG site

Here is an an example to what I mean - was done via the drag and drop since I cant attach a file to post in areas I do not moderate.

(https://newlifegames.com/nlg/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fnewlifegames.net%2Fnlg%2Findex.php%3Faction%3Ddlattach%3Btopic%3D27951.0%3Battach%3D65710%3Bimage&hash=84584fc85a4df926a4bef5299645bc3090f5bbec) (http://newlifegames.net/nlg/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=27951.0;attach=65709;image)

When you hover the mouse pointer over it Firefox shows the link as pointing to the current newlifegames.net site and not actually moving the picture to here.

Rich, you are doing GREAT!  :applause:

The ONE thing I would tell you to make it a little easier, is rather than entering the info about WHO posted
and WHEN transferred to New Site at the top of each msg, on the OLD site select QUOTE on the message you
are transferring then "Copy" the body of the quoted message in the "Quick Reply" box at the bottom of the
thread and post THAT to the new site...it will show who originally posted as a quote. (you may have to add
attachments if there are any.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE FROM THE THREAD YOU WERE WORKING ON:

If you are using a CON2 link controller or the ChamII+ these both have the data return line.
These will both put the jackpot amount on the PE+ monitor.
If you are using an older Con1 (this is what I have) this will require a Mikohn gateway to create the data return line to do the same thing.

With regards to your question about a TV screen. i am not sure if your referring to the PE+ monitor as the tv screen or an actual TV / flat panel display. As far as I know I have not seen any adapter to take the output of the Mikohn equipment to any kind of display adapter.

I have never had the time but I suspect the 2 wire line that is output from a con1 to the LED5 or LED4 display drivers is a RS485 signal and you could probably get a RS485 to USB adapter and if you could get the jackpot values then you could output from a PC to a flat panel. It would take a bit of custom coding.

If you are not a Casino tech no one from Bally is going to offer you any support at any price.

This is why NLG came into existence - you had hundreds of home slot owners and no support.

Problem with some of these platforms is in the early days, some things that were thought to be fixes, turned out to not really be the fix! Like Alphas, they took awhile a couple years for the machines became more available to members, but now, there's enough knowledge of the platform to separate the "guesses" from the real fixes.

Joey, as in my response to the Moderators Wanted thread, I'd be happy to take on CEI Video Poker; and if I don't break my pick consolidating and moving those threads,
I'd take on Other Video.  However, beyond the mechanics of moving, modifying, and deleting posts,
I would like to know more about what a moderator should do, and when to use the tools described.
For instance, in addition to pitching in with help in a familiar area, and moving threads
to more appropriate areas, does a moderator ping other members to chime in in their known area of expertise?
Post questions and surveys to keep the interest up?
Delete obscene posts?
PM users in a pissing match to grow up?

If I'm being a clueless dickhead here, just tell me; I just like to know if there's a bridge out before I start laying rubber down the road. :RoadRunner1:

Please check out this first transfer http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=1039.0 (http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=1039.0)
I used the Print function to put the entire old thread into Word, where I could edit freely; and saved the photos
to my Downloads. When edit was finished, I posted on the new site with the minimum number of separate posts
determined by which posts had photos.

Seemed like an efficient way for me, but is this acceptable? If not, I will gladly rework it.

Coming across many posts requesting manuals; someone uploads the manual to the site; shortly thereafter the manual is gone;
time-after-time-after time.

I'm guessing it's because the manuals are Copyrighted, and have been removed to protect the site from scavengers lawyers.

Is this correct? If so, would it be reasonable in the appropriate places to say something like [Moderator's Note: posted copyrighted manuals and other documents are subject to removal for the protection of NLG]  ?

Manuals were mostly too large to attach to posts and also would have gotten buried that way, and we didn't want endless copies uploaded every time someone requested the same manual again in a new thread since that would take up far too much space.

However, we wanted to provide a way to share these large documents since most members' email systems had limits on the maximum size of attachments, so most of those requests were filled by placing a copy in the "Share a file" section where we had provisions for large files and everyone reading the thread could go to find it if they wished.

They were left there for a short while and new requests were referred without the need to re-upload. We cleared it out on a regular basis, though. In addition, we had to abandon it when hackers started uploading malicious code in attempts to compromise the site, so nothing remains now.

Whew... SNK logs are left to move... all the others are done and some new log entries added tonight for boards I've repaired over the past month.

Once those are done, I'll start on monitors and look to see what Arcade section stickies should be moved over.
