Hi all, I am brand new to working on slot machines. I just acquired an E2240.
So far....
- powers up, some lights come on but thats about it. tilt light is on and coin accepted light is on.
- the 6 digit box shows 01 .0.00
- the 6 digit box doesnt line up with the glass (its a little to the left and half of the first digit is partially hidden behind the artwork on the glass).
- the return coin button is stuck down
- i see the plastic part for the coins to go thru, with a sliding adjuster. i assume i can adjust that for tokens instead of quarters?
- does the hopper need to be full? (do i have to get some tokens for it?)
- what is the chute that goes out of the bottom of the machine? any coin i put in seems to go this route.
- i did find the pdf manual for this machine and i am going thru it trying to figure things out. is there a faq or anything for newbies?
thanks in advance.

Hi !
we want to see as many interior and exterior pictures as possible !
Open the door and press reset sw (left on hopper board)
and reset keyswitch on the side off the cabinet (on the right next to hopper)
follow if the display changes
try to enter test mode, press test sw (right on hopper board)
follow if the display changes

if you don't find anything obvious, it is recommended to inspect all the power connectors and then the state of the solders on the back of the boards
Check the supply voltages on the source and on the test points on the cpu board and io board according to the manual
what troubleshooting equipment do you have ?
multimeter
oscilloscope
logic analyzer
-
so the code is actually 71 0.000 / 71 0.006 (switches back and forth). according to the manual that is a reel code but i have heard others say is a door switch code.
mine is the bally e2240
got it to go into some test modes. i tried test 3 (switches) and when i press the door switch (behind the lower hinge) it jumps out of the test and goes back to 71 0.000. so i think maybe it could be the door switch? i will see if i can find a replacement for it.
i hear it run through some tests, lights, bell, various solenoids etc.
i do have a multimeter so i will start checking some voltages starting at the power supply and work my way downstream.
will also look at the main board and i/o board. re-seat some connections etc, check battery.
anything else i should check out?

when the door is closed, the test mode is automatically interrupted
-
if it enters test mode it is good, it means that it boots relatively correctly from eprom M1-M3
try all tests consecutively from 1 to 8
In test mode 8 is game simulation without payment
-
to my knowledge 70 000 is Military door open code
but this does not prevent you from completing all the tests
-
A door open code that relates to SDS. There is a jumper on the I/O board inputs that makes 50 as the default door open.
-
what is SDS?
did a bit of poking around the machine this evening
all fuses are good.
checked voltage from the power supply board:
5v DC showed 5v DC
7.5v DC showed 6.5v DC
10v DC showed 8.4v DC
not sure of the discrepencies mean anything as the manual states "approximate".
cleaned up the hopper, but it does not spin freely. there is a white plastic mechanism on the motor that prevents it from spinning. is this normal or should it spin freely?
im gonna take a look at the reels tomorrow. any tips on the sensors, kick and catch mechanisms?
havent had much luck running tests yet.
gonna try to get a new door switch. any good places to get parts online?

Slot Data System
Attached is a note I made a while ago about 7x code.
-
it is normal, the hopper has an electromechanical brake, so that it does not spin inertially
you said you entered the test 3
is it the only one that goes in ?
-
take detailed pictures with CPU and IO board, plugs and switches

Test 4 is the hopper test, the hopper should turn on and spit out 10 coins.
The break arm is pulled in when the hopper motor has voltage on it allowing the motor to spin.
When voltage is removed the break arm releases and stops the motor from spinning.
Have you downloaded the E-Series service manual?
www.slotmachinerepair.com (http://www.slotmachinerepair.com) under "helpful PDFs" has a free download of the manual.

made a little progress with some of the tests:
switch test - all switches check out except for the switch on top of the hopper.
hopper test - nothing happens. code displayed is 54 and i dont see anything for that code in the manual. gonna guess that the hopper motor is dead.
reel test - i get 00.00.-- nothing happens when i spin the reels. i checked the cam switch position and it matches whats in the manual. same for the sensors next to the index wheels. the reels do wobble a little bit and are slightly warped but no rubbing on the sensors.
memory test - i dont get a prom version but i do get a rom version 502588.
does it need a prom to function? there is a chip on the mpu board in that position but the sticker is peeled off. the secondary prom position below it is empty.
i will try to get some pics of the boards
-
502588 is the P1 ROM version !
To see M ROM verse. , P1 must be removed
-
unlikely to burn the engine
but quickly a thyristor or triac
inspect the controller
-
Post pictures !

Hopefully attached are
Power board
Hopper board (is a diode missing right below red connector?)
Reel board
Main board
IO board
-
in the diagram CR6 is a zener diode
I don't know if it is essential
it doesn't hurt to try to mount it
