What determines the GKB to use?
« on: September 19, 2020, 07:21:20 PM »
I've been beating my head on the desk, printing whole PSRs, analyzing them, entering to what I believe is supposed to be the correct GKB chip, and 10 entries later I find that what I was basing the GKB on, was wrong. My current dilemma is those for MN and the use of GKB00026 or GKB00038. I've tried using GK002776 & GK003268 as well as others to school myself, but apparently that doesn't work. I've Googled for any documents that may show what such-and-such boot prom was with replaced with that such-and-such number, with no luck. I did find one for Keychips, though.

At first I thought is was the type of Optional Spectrum Display. Nope. Then I thought it was that one of them the Acceptor Limit was limited to $3,000. Nope. Then it was that one of them had Secure Standard Validation as an option. That wasn't it either. Then I thought it was that one said not to use the WAMM Address of 0. You guessed it, nope. I even went as far as thinking maybe it was the Play History (10 or 25 games) that made the difference in which GKB to use. That was a dead end too. Other than the differences I've already listed, both types of game PSRs (GK002776 & GK003268) are EXACTLY the same. I'm starting to believe that IGT just flipped a coin to determine most choices.

The PSRs for GKB00026 and GKB00038 indicate they offer ONLY External Authentication. I have also learned they are both for NON-Server based installation.

So if anybody knows what else to look for in a game's PSR that's missing the Boot Prom (GKB) number, I would love to be schooled on this. Thanks.

No, just trying to fill in missing information. I know I could throw a GKBDEV39 in just about everything, I wanted to find the correct number that supposed to be there.

The GKB is like an OS, you can usb GKB36 for anything out there.  The PSR's states to use a specific GKB chip or it's "replacement."

Thank you, sir. I thought that GKB36 was like a "universal use" or a kind of default and appreciate the confirmation of my assumptions. Just like the use of GKB6 when Phase I started (pre-GK000223 time frame). I personally like to learn the in's and out's of something down to this detail, not just plug and play cuz it works. Like, but why does the widget make the wheel on the bus go 'round and 'round? LOL
