Title: New Owner with Game King. Questions about key chips
Post by: shatterproof on August 15, 2017, 11:03:06 AM
I ended up a few machines with various slot software and all were non functional. Some quick research brought me to the dead batteries. I  was able to revive nearly every board with new batteries. I was surprised how much the batteries would affect the boards.

Now I'm trying to disable missing hoppers and a few printers and I would also like to change a few other options but apparently need a Key chip. It looks like I need key chip 40. I've gone through all of the machines I ended up with and none have the key chip. I hunted around for the .bin file and my searches have failed me. I've got a eprom burner handy and was hoping to knock these out in the next few days. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Depends on the hardware and software you're running.  Most common for Game King/I-games are 17, 22, 28, and 40.  3902 boards?  044 boards? 044 with flash card? 044 with legacy adapter board?  Need more details to say for sure.  There is no one key fits all.

It's unlikely you'll find a .bin file and definitely not on NLG due to copyright laws.

Post some pics of your MPU's along with Base/GME chip numbers and chances are we can tell you what key(s) you need.

You can probably get whatever keychip(s) you need from one of NLG's vendors.

I'll snap some pictures of as many of the boards as I can get to. Thanks.

I had an issue getting the pictures on here, it looks like they were over the max file size.

I put them in the gallary here.

The last 2 boards are different, I haven't really gotten around to messing with them.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Thanks.

They are mostly 3902 boards, needs Key 22.  The last 2 are 044 boards with legacy adapter, you will need a key 40 for those.

I thought I had read key 40 is a direct replacement for key 22. Is that not true?

Like Rick said, Key 40 is for the 044 boards w/legacy adapter.  Others are either Key 17 or Key 22 according to PSR's for the base chips.  I842 (Enchanted Unicorn) & I602 (Wild Bear Salmon Run) call for Key 17.  I974 (Lucky Larry Lobstermania) & I1165 (Tabasco) call for 22.  I didn't look up all of them.

Here's the deal with the Keychips.  Key 40 will key every 3902 game I've ever tried it on....BUT. BUT..you must clear the RAM and EEPROM first in order for it to work on every game.  I call it the "nuclear option" because it wipes everything out.   That's not very convenient if you just want to change a single setting on a game, especially multigame multihand game king poker games that take a significant amount of time to set up.

If you try to apply the Keychip only option from the menu (Key 22 and 40 have menus) with the wrong key the game will simply boot up as normal.  It will not enter the keychip menu.  Key 17 does not have any menus, it simply lights two amber LEDs on the processor board when the keychip function has been installed.  You then power down the machine and reinstall the base chip and it will boot to the keychip menu providing it was done with zero credits on the machine and is the correct key.

Bottom line if you want the correct keys for your games get 17, 22, & 40.  If you just want to get them all up and running you can just get Key 40, clear everything everytime you use it and it will work.

If you want to get the keychips from a NLG vendor start a new WTB (wanted to buy) thread here (you can't post to the classified section if you're not a contributing member) and I will move it to the classified section for you.

Good luck.  Hope you get them all up and running.

great information there! Thank you. I honestly won't mind wiping out all of the data so I'll probably go with a key 40. I don't have any of the poker games yet, when I do I may add another key to the collection.  I've been able to get most of these running but need the key to remove things like the card printer or hopper for payout.

I'll post a wtb shortly. Thanks!!

Key40 is a replacement for Key22. Either will work on those 3902 boards. Key28 is needed for the 044 boards.
