Title: Flashing NETPLEX link is down.
Post by: Double D on January 17, 2024, 02:00:12 PM
Hello all. First time posting long term lurker.  I have an S2000 IGT double Diamond with the enhanced board. Machine was purchased in 2019 and has been flawless until recently.  I received a battery low error and bought the 2354 3v to replace the old one.  The Varta battery was installed.  After installing new battery I was able to get the error code for ram error with the 4 key turns etc, and it went to “please close door”.  I let it sit for the recommend couple of hours and nothing.  So I pulled the MCU and noticed the VARTA did indeed have corrosion so I removed it and I also removed U16 chip at same time.  Put the MCU back in the slot and now I get a flashing NETPLEX link down and a flashing red light on the MCU. Machine worked fantastic up to the low battery and now I can’t get it to boot at all.
Will a clear and key work?  Optics are bypassed and I haven’t plugged or unplugged anything on the machine except for the MCU which is enhanced 1270
Thank you in advance.

Before going any further, I recommend ruling out the power supply. Do you have another you can swap with ?

No I don’t. I guess I should order one and try it out. They seem to be a common cause of failure as well.

There is a long list of things that can cause a Netplex Link Down error, but the two most common seem to be a bad power supply and acid damage from the Green Varta battery. Even after removal of the green battery, the damage might have already been done and usually requires replacing the board.

If you have a multimeter, verify the 13 & 25 vdc output of the power supply. Also verify the voltage on pin #7 which should be 5 to 8 vdc. Pin #7 being out of spec will bring the system down, even when 13 & 25 vdc appear ok.

Check the board connectors for bent pins. Check the game board for bent pins as well. Is the only LED flashing the red one? All the others are on?

Thanks for the replies guys.
The MCU is flashing 3rd and 4th amber and last red. The 3rd amber and red flash in sequence.

Checked the pins and removed the power supply couldn’t get 5v on the 7 pin. Not sure if where the 13 and 25VDC output is? I could use help in locating that on the power supply.  I also checked the fuse it is good. I have very limited micro electrical experience. I operated and broke the avionics in the Navy not work on them.  All help is truly appreciated. I ordered a new powe supply from gamblers oasis.

checking the power supply is always a good idea in this situation. But my concern is the flashing red light after a u16 removal. That almost always indicates a bad board. Try putting the varta back on the board and see if you can move forward from there. If not wait for the power supply to arrive, but I'm afraid your board is toast.

Thanks guys.  Lookes helped me trouble shoot some more.  I am gonna try the power supply and will let you all know.  Great resources.  Thanks.

Could we see a close-up photo of the area where the Varta battery used to be?  :sherlock:
I'm thinking that a circuit trace possibly could have been severed, when the Varta was removed?  :scratch-head_2:

Yeah...could be a bad PSU?
You have some info from Daily on where to check.

Good photo you've posted of the area where the Varta used to be...looks like clean cuts.

Got a new power supply and it checks good for voltage on all black red and orange. Purchased an MCU enhanced and installed after loading my chips. Still get the red led and amber led only this time no NETPLEX down flash.  Help!

I do have new mother board since the power supply checks out and the replacement MCU was tested before sent to me, and is duplicating the same thing the old MCU did is it likely the issue is in the mother board somewhere?

Bad software maybe?
Leg folded under chip body in socket?

The main circuit board holding the software chips is called an MPU
The P stands for Processor.

Software ran fine in old board.  I checked the pins on the chips I installed on new board.  Same results.  Thinking it may be backplane / mother board?

Just an update.  I received another MPU and put my game chips into it. Installed. Same result.  No VFD display this time and still red LED flashing.  Installed new power supply.  Same results.  I have sent the first MPU to Lookes for repair and test.  I will be sending the second MPU after I get the first one back from Lookes.  Will report how it goes.  Thank you for the help so far.  Any one know where I can purchase an SB100054?
