Coin Comparitor divertor noise
« on: April 25, 2021, 03:42:18 PM »
Well I want to start out by saying sorry if this has already been discussed but I did not see it answered here on the forum!
The issue is the coin divertor assembly on initial power up and for about a couple hours for some reason having a noise/rattle issue!
I have swapped out coils, adjust the armature spring and armature with no luck!
Some people call this the coin "Rake" at any rate is there a way to quiet it down!
I know for home usage it can be disconnected all together but I prefer to keep it original!
The one I am having this issue with now is on an IGT Players Edge + Multi Poker but I don't think this is a model specific problem!
Any thoughts on this?

I've checked the caps on the MPU and they all are within tolerance so that doesn't look like that is it!

The cap on the comparitor board

I'll give that another look but I have swapped out comparitor assemblies as well as I have extras but they could all have bad caps, who knows?

Flaky ground wire on the coin comparitor harness?

I don't think the noise is coming from the comparator.
I suspect its coming from the solenoid that gets engaged when a coin is accepted.

When the coin passes the comparator and optic, a solenoid pulls back the rake and drops the coin in the hopper.
If it rejects the solenoid does not get engaged and the coins drop to the coin tray instead.

a simple test would be to drop in a couple of pennies or dimes - which should fall to the coin tray - if its the comparator then you will hear the noise. If you don't then its likely the solenoid.

A common problem on both the S+ and PE+ is that solenoid burns out. Many techs and especially for home use simply wire tie the rake into acceptance position meaning all coins go to the hopper and never spend the $30 to replace the solenoid.

Your absolutely right Jay as it only occurs when the coil/solenoid pulls the armature, the "Rake", so coins will enter the hopper, but my quandary is I have extra coils, extra racks/armatures and the springs that place the tension on the armature and have done swap outs with only varying audible noise!
It pulls after a game is selected so when the menu is on the screen awaiting selection in the getting player attention mode it is quiet but once a game is selected from the Menu it pulls then after 5 coins have been played, the maximum setting I set it for, it releases so the additional coins put in return to coin tray and the sound goes away at that point!
I have tested it outside of the comparitor frame with the wiring harness still connected and moving it in different angles changes the sound so it is definitely in the coil, armature, armature spring area.
I know I can disengage the coil for home usage but I would prefer to keep it original and suffering from OCD, as I do, I would like to correct it!
Granted if the game is left on all the time it fads away after a couple hours for some reason, probably having to due with resistance build up between the coil and the armature, not sure!
But if the customer wants to turn it off when not in use every time they turn it on it will possibly be annoying!

Some point in time there was a piece of Adhesive backed  Mylar was used on the rake  so that when it pulled in against the armature it would quiet it. Try a piece of Scotch tape on the inside of the rake.

Thanks Sunrise as I have noticed on some of the extra assemblies I have that there was a clear piece of "tape" of some type, possibly mylar! The sound I hear is definitely coming from metal to metal, the rake/armature against the metal housing on the coil pulling!
I have also checked the cap value with my capacitance meter and the cap you had mentioned in your first response, the 35 V. 220uF cap does check out as well but I will swap out a new one and see what happens as it may fail or be weakened and change value under load!
As in an email I had sent to a knowledgeable tech I know, a varying voltage would cause pulse voltage at the coil an cause the "rattle"!
Or maybe I am being to critical, damn OCD! :Scratch-Head:

"Varying Voltage" happens for a few reasons....bad intermittent or weak grounding is one of them.

Remember, these things are pretty darn old....many of the components are starting to go out of specs.
I would check other IC components on the line on the CC card.

But if this chattering is happening with your other CC cards and coils, then the source of the problem may be laying further back along the line in the CC and door harnessing.

That's why it mentioned earlier of a possible bad ground in the harness earlier or even further back to the motherboard and MPU.

Thanks for your input, as the issue is mainly on initial turn on of the game and after it is on for a couple hours or slightly less it stops after "warm up" so to speak I suppose it could be a wire harness connection possibly, who knows?
I have a large warehouse/shop situation that never really gets above 65 degrees and it may never occur in a home environment that would maintain a warmer surrounding and especially if left on as these were meant to be in a casino location!
As I mentioned before I may just be over thinking this but I am thankful for the input as even though I primarily service older mechanical slots and Bally E/M's I do occasionally work on the later IGT and Bally models having parts for those as well!
Thanks Again for your Input!

Cold/hot...possible....metal expansion? lol
I'm sure the grease doesn't work too good in an old EM when it's cold.
