Best Way to CLEAN COINS?
« on: August 29, 2022, 05:49:37 AM »
I have 5 IGT machines with coin handling. It's fun to play them but my fingers get dirty from the coins.

Is there a tried and true way to get coins clean?

I originaly washed them in soap and super hot water. I think that did work, but then I mixed unwashed coins with them, and now I do need to clean them all again.

My Dad has a rock tumbler. It would be cool to shine them up too.

What is the secret to shiny clean coins with the least effort?

Thanks

Brasso, assuming they're regular circulated coins that are only worth face value.

Failing that, electrolysis also works well (Google "coin electrolysis"). Just don't connect the leads the wrong way otherwise the coins will rot away rather than the sacrificial anode.

I soak them in Dish soap with some 409. It doesn’t necessarily make them prettier but I know they are cleaner than they started. Keep in mind metal will still rub off.

I agree with the Brasso method. Mom used this for years to clean her silver.

The only addition to this that I have is that my wife had an old electro-sonic jewelry cleaner.
Nothing magical about this device except it has settings to vibrate at 30, 50,80 hertz.

You fill it with your cleaning liquid drop in your ring or such and it comes out looking like new.

You can pick one of these up on Amazon for less than $30

If you are doing jewelry, watch what you use for cleaning solution.
I threw in a pair of gold colored cufflinks I picked up from an estate sale with just some dawn dish liquid. This is what they advertise is gentle enough to remove oil from wildlife. Long story short.... They came out silver colored.
I had to question myself if they were just so tarnished that they looked gold/brass colored or just so cheap that all the coating fell off.  :Scratch-Head:

I use a vibrating tumbler with either corn cob media or walnut hulls.  Works like a champ.
