Title: SAD NEWS!!!
Post by: captainhappy on November 16, 2021, 10:09:32 PM
Some of you may know me, but I suspect that most of you have no idea who I am!! Unfortunately due to life getting in the way I have not been on NLG for many years.

I am one of the original founders of NLG and like a Brother to Joey...

I am so sad that the reason for me posting on here is so tragic!!!

A few of you may be aware of this information, but for most of you who are not aware, I have been asked to announce it here publicly to the extended NLG FAMILY!

Sadly our fearless Leader Joey Carruthers has passed away on Sunday, November 14th, 2021. He fought a prolonged and valiant battle against the COVID-19 Virus and it's effects on his body. I can only say that he is no longer suffering and is in a better place now. He leaves behind many loved ones and he will be sorely missed by family and friends alike!

Joey had been pushing me to come visit, and in return I insisted it was his turn to come out and visit me. We would always go back in forth on this. He kept telling me to log on and let everyone here know that the long lost ADMIN was alive and kicking!!! LOL I have been joking with his family the last couple of days saying that I can't believe the extent Joey went to get me to finally log on and make a post... I am bawling, laughing and crying while typing this post and getting hit by a flood of awesome memories that I have with Joey and his family!!! One of those thoughts that came to mind is that I am sure that Joey has hooked up with our long lost friend Buzz up there and they are both looking down at all of us and are giving us the finger!!!

He had been ecstatic lately being a Grandfather! He loves his family, and I know that they are all having a tough time dealing with losing such a beloved man... I am sure that they would love to hear whatever comments that you may have to share. Please share your Condolences, Memories, Stories and anything else as I am positive that they will take comfort in reading them and seeing how much he was loved and will be missed!

We will all be doing whatever we can to keep his Legacy living on here on NLG, at the shop, and at home!!

Again I am sorry to have to share this Sad News to you all!

I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU JOEY!! REST IN PEACE IN MY BROTHER!!!

I am absolutely devastated by this news.

Joey, Captain Happy, myself and StatFreak are pictured on the home page together. under the heading of NLG Members Pics.
Its one of my absolute favorite pictures with "the guys" and I will miss him terribly.

I was in Laughlin in 2019 with my 88' year old father and we got in a cab and told him he just had to meet Joey.

My message  and I don't care what your politics are: is get vaxxed.
It won't stop the virus but it might keep you from an early exit. Life is short enough.

I echo Marks sentiment. We'll do whatever we can to help you in any way to keep NLG going.

Hey NLG family! Many of you may not know me, I'm Joey's oldest son. I know a bunch of the original members will however.

When Joey (dad) started this website it was originally because I had created a admittedly terrible NLG site for him. In a push to get dad to follow his dreams I created a basic and basic HTML new Life games site. Him being who he was looked at it and immediately said he had a better idea. He then spent the next month creating a web forum for slot people. And we see where that took him.

He was always a project minded and went all in when he set himself to one.

We will all miss him deeply!!!

As Scotty said, he will be running the store and shop. I will be there to help him and make sure everything goes as dad would have wanted.

I encourage everyone to post you memories of Joey, he would want that.

He's on the big reels in the sky with Buzz.  :odie:

I'm devastated really sad and angry that covid has taken another.
Scotty and Krissy so sorry for your loss.
Hard to believe how sad I feel.

I am saddened to read of Joey‘s passing. I never met him in person or talk to them on the phone. I was introduced to NLG by a friend after I purchased my first S2000.. It was in pieces and missing a piece of glass. I was able to find the parts and received the help to get it running. I’ve been here ever since. I’ve learned from many people on the NLG sight. I was taught the Bally EM and E1000/2000 Ballys from people like Barry Fox. Sorry for jumping off track, just started reminiscing about all the good times I’ve had an hours I’ve spent here on New Life Games.
My condolences and Prayers 🙏🙏 go out to you Scotty and family for the loss of your father. May he rest in peace and be cooking tacos with Buzz up in Heaven. I can hear Joey & Buzz.. Fuck Covid.. 🖕🖕

WOW, This is the second devastating news over the last few days. My old boss at the Electronics Warehouse where I worked and got a lot of my parts just passed on Friday And now this, I’m shaking so bad for ALL of the LOSS, that has just occurred. I’m fairly new to NLG, and I wanted to share something with YOU ALL. I have dementia, and I got into slots to help me with it as well as loving electronics. JOEY would take the extra time with me, even call me back after hours to help me fix machines. I have fallen in love with this hobby and it’s helping me a lot with my issues. I’m so GREAT-FULL for finding a human being that cared about other people. He will be missed deeply. I KNOW His kindness and knowledge has touched others as well just by the way his NLG teammates have been sharing their kindness and help to me. I will continue my adventures in the Slot Machine World, ALWAYS remembering JOEY for the WONDERFUL guy that He was and will be in heaven.
To ALL at NLG, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALLOWING ME TO BECOME PART OF YOUR FAMILY.
Again,as I wipe these tears away, I will miss him dearly.

I was SO very sad to hear the news of Joey's passing. My deepest condolences go out to his family.

I have not been on this site much in many years. I've popped in a couple times here and there
and have seen the various posts on FB. I've always felt NLG has been part of my "extended family."
That is largely because of Joey as well as many of the other wonderful folks who've been a part of
and helped make NLG as great as it is.

I never met Joey in person. I told my wife several times that we were going to go to a 4th of July
event at "headquarters" one day but life got in the way and we never made it.

I did talk to Joey many times both over the phone and via chat back when we had the dreaded website
crashes & switchover. I can say that he was very dedicated to the cause here. When he started this gig,
I don't think he knew just how big & far it would go but by the time the sh*t hit the fan he was all about
keeping it going.

I found NLG, I think like most people, because I was having a problem with a machine and was freaking out
cause I didn't know what to do to fix it. I made a post of my "desperation" only to find out that my problem
was not only a common one but super simple to fix. Several guys jumped in to help me out and of course there
was some poking fun at the newbie action as well but I was SO relieved to get my machine fixed.

After my "christening", I found myself spending a significant amount of time on the website. Anything I know,
I learned here. Listen to the guys with grey hair...they know what they're talking about! Now I find myself
the one with the grey hair. I found NLG to be a great place of camaraderie, brotherhood, & welcoming to
everyone.

Joey had a bead on people. For some reason he brought me in. Despite my random "rant" posts and being
a newbie I found myself inducted into the club. He even created a title for me. He trusted me with behind the
scenes info and administrative access. Joey knew he couldn't do it all on his own but also knew to choose his
help wisely. To that end, I don't know why he chose me, someone who he's never even met,  but I couldn't
have been more proud to be part of such a great team with a great leader. It literally was a pleasure to do
anything I could to help.

I cannot fathom how devastating his loss is to his family and my heart breaks for them. I can say that the
legacy he left is amazing. He definitely left his footprint on the world. He has touched a countless number
of people both directly and indirectly. There is no doubt that he helped make the world a better place.

God speed to you my friend. You will be dearly missed!

I can’t believe the posts that are coming in. It is absolutely AMAZING how many people that JOEY, and the NLG family have, and still are touching. It’s hard to go on the site, EVERY TIME, I do it takes me 45 minutes to post 5 sentences. I’m spending more time wiping the tears from my face so I can see the screen to post something. It took me over an hour to finish reading TJKELLERS  post, because of the tears. He said it ALL. THANK YOU ALL AGAIN NLG FAMILY FOR YOUR KINDNESS & ASSISTANCE.

Terrible news during terrible times.  Joey was the first person I spoke to in 2005 when I bought my wife her first 809 EM.  He was a gentleman and encouraged me to join this group.  I have been a member ever since.  Only a few weeks ago I called up the shop as I was having trouble helping a new member to join and asked to speak with him.  I was simply told that he was not in.  Tragic!

PLEASE be vigilant about protecting yourself and your family.  Rest in peace old friend.

This is shocking news, Scotty, your father was a great asset to this industry and a big hearted and loved man. He had built NLG from the ground up and was able to help so many near and far. That says a lot about  the man. I started out on this sight many years ago to just learn about the two slot machines that I had just purchased and how they work. I have 10 now and thanks to Joey, he said you can never have enough. He also was the first person that told me he was going to make me a Supporting Vendor. For someone who just had a hobby of making unique slot machine/game room décor. He believed in me before I did my own self. Now it has always continued to just be a hobby but I will forever be in his depth for being the first one. I never met Joey and have met Jay and Stat freak and as I, they will carry on Joey's Legacy.  My prayers are with you and your family. He will be dearly missed.

I am so sad to read this news, my condolences to you all.  Joey was a great guy and tremendous resource, so glad I was able to meet him in person and visit the shop.   Sucks that I wasn’t able to make it back out since.

NLG has been a second family to many, and by far the best resource for slots, all thanks to this incredible guy.  Sadly I stepped away for a few years for health reason, and finally looking to get caught up and back into NLG world but shocked when I read this post.   We all know that COVID sucks, and keeps impacting all of our lives.

I’m so sorry for your loss,  you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Scotty, its been weeks now since you told me about your dad, I've wanted to post, but I'm still at a loss of words. In the short time of being a slot tech in Laughlin, I made a few friends, but none as helpful as you and your Dad. The first time I met you guys was when you were moving from the old store to the present location, just down the street from where I live. He was tossing out a couple machines, I asked if I could have them to practice on and next thing I knew you were loading them in the truck for me.  Friends made. Thru out the next months I would stop in for advice, trade parts or just B.S. I loved his stories of being a slot tech back in the day at the Belle or Edgewater, they taught me a lot, like who I could trust in the cut throat world of Casinos (nobody), what to watch for, things you could get away with and things you couldn't. His knowledge of gaming machines astounded me. How could someone possibly keep all that info inside 1 brain, it, he, was amazing. We had a lot in common, love of mechanical objects, guns, Ham Radio, Trump, a downright cool guy. I remember last summer when the riots were going on all over the country, making plans to defend the store if needed and how we would go about it.  I miss talking to him. I know you've learned a great deal from him and was glad when you told me you were planning on keeping the store open and running it. It's what he would have wanted and I think you're going to be successful at it. I'll keep coming by, buggin ya, but I want you to know if there is ever anything you need that I can help you with, just let me know, I'm right down the street. RIP Joey

I'm sorry to admit it, but I don't frequent NLG as much as I used to, so I wasn't aware of Joey's passing.  My sincere condolences to his family and friends on his loss.  I met him once while on vacation in Las Vegas, probably ten or more years ago. (Have a pic somewhere of myself in front of the shop).  He let me look around, talked shop, and hooked me up with some NLG gear (I still have the blue lunch/beer bag cooler).  He always seemed like a cool dude and was a great asset to the slot community.  RIP Joey, hope you and Buzz are pulling the one arm bandits in the great beyond.

My condolences to his family and friends. Like some of the others it's been a while since I have been on the NLG site. I had visited the shop a few times years ago when I lived in Vegas and would come down to Laughlin to throw our boat on the Colorado River. Though I did not meet him personally that I know though his efforts live on. He built a great resource for many. RIP

Well I'm sure I'm not the last to say what a great man Joey was and the site he developed. Although I have just logged in after years of time off, this still was a shock to me!
COVID kicked a lot of ass and took from this earth some very good people. In 2020 when it started, I lost a good fire Chief from COVID that Ironically he caught in a symposium on COVID. May peace rest in his soul and on the mined of his family to look back this many years later and see how loved he was.
