Hello, looking for some advice on my 2005 IGT The Frog prince 5 reel with the monitor above it. I purchased the game not working. I installed a new battery on the main board and the also the computer board. The machine turns on but the upper monitor never comes on. It says display passes self test. The fan is running for the upper computer behind the monitor. I recently also replaced the upper power supply that is located right behind the monitor with no luck. Thanks Matt

The fan on top of the top box is powered by the power supply behind the reels. That will not indicate the top box is getting power..
Open the top box and see if any red LEDs on the motherboard are lit. Try removing and reinstalling the two stick memory cards in the top box. Do this more than once to help remove any corrosion on the contacts.
Usually if the top box is doing nothing at all it's the power supply, memory sticks as noted above, or the motherboard has gone bad.
What does the bottom display say? Does it ever get to "Waiting for video display" or display passes self test is all you are getting.

Also post a picture of the game (full face) and a picture of the lower CPU with the chips visible.

I pulled out the 2 memory sticks and reinstalled them. There are 2 red lights that are on, on the mother board. Here are some pictures of the game. It also says waiting for video display.

OK if you are getting waiting for the video display the bottom CPU is working and waiting for the top box handshake.
It appears the top box is getting power.
Is the fan running above the Intel chip with the heat sink?
Are you getting any beeps or noise from the top box board when you power it up?
Remove and reseat the memory sticks three or four times each.
There are some bulging caps by the heat sink. This is not uncommon but will eventually stop the motherboard from functioning.

After pulling out and resetting the memory sticks 4 times the upper monitor now boots up!!! I attached a picture of the screen. Not sure really what to do next?

Now this next part may be easy depending on what kind of old computer parts you have kicking around.
You will need to find a computer keyboard with a PS2 plug on it. (Small round purple plug).
USB keyboard will not work.
With the machine off plug the keyboard into the side of the top box. Turn on the machine and keep pressing the delete key. A bios screen should come up. Set the time and date. Then look for "load optimized defaults "
Press that key and save.
Turn off power, remove keyboard and turn on.
Let me know what happens next.

Hi Rich, I plugged the keyboard in. Set the date and time, and also uploaded the optimized defaults. I was able to get to the menu on setting up the machine. I set the domination and tito. Not sure what else I need to check? It now comes up with a machine type mismatch, closure M.

You may have to key the machine to change or it may let you change it without a key chip you must navigate to machine type 7.1.6 and set to upright.

After switching it to upright. The machine had been working great for a week straight. Not sure what happened the other night the upper screen and small screen below the reels are no longer showing any display. The machine turns on but not doing anything at this point. Not sure if the power supply went bad. Thanks Matt

Are any of the lights on the machine coming on?
What does the VFD say?
If the VFD says waiting for video display then there is a problem with the top box

Nothing is showing on the VFD. The background light comes on, on the VFD and monitor.

Bill validator doesn't cycle anything?

Hi Rich, I plugged it in again. The bill validator doesn't cycle at all. Also all 8 lights on the main board stay lite up.

Red lights also lit on MPU?
Remove the MPU and turn machine on and let me know if the validator cycles and the top box boots to initialize

Correct, the red light is lit. I pulled the mpu and the upper monitor booted right up. The bill validator did not cycle. It says Netplex link is down.

With the mpu removed the BV doesn't cycle?

The blue light just comes on the bv with the + on the vehicle. It would do that even before until the entire machine turned on. Then it would cycle when it was working before.

With the MPU removed when you turn on the power the BV should be heard cycling.
If it does not you may have a power supply problem. ( The one behind the reels).
You can try reseating it and then see if the BV cycles with the MPU removed.
Either way I'm assuming it is cycling and we are down to the MPU. You can try carefully reseating the chips and making sure the coin battery has at least 2.9 V.
You should also remove the green Varta battery following directions from this link:

Sorry for the delay. I removed the varta battery and U16 off the 1270 board. Unit still won't power up with the mpu board installed. Does anyone repair the 1270 boards or have a replacement one for sale? Thanks Matt

If you pull the 1270 mpu out and power up the machine the BV should still cycle, does it?

The BV did not cycle with the door closed and the mpu removed. The blue light flashes on the BV. The upper monitor comes on and says initializing. Displays Netplex link is down.

Check the power supply behind the reels.
BV should cycle with no mpu and door open.

I did pull the reels out and removed the power supply and reinstalled it a couple of times. Keep getting the same result with the BV

Cpu installed and bv removed. The upper monitor doesn't come on. All 8 lights on the cpu are lit. The 2nd green light down from the top is flickering.

All linked netplex devices, printer, BV, VFD, red LED display, and I/O cards. Any one bad will lock up the machine.
With the machine off reseat all of the I/O cards. Then try. If that doesn't help with the machine off unplug the printer. Then try. Just remember do not unplug or plug anything with the machine powered up.

How many I/O cards are there? Is that the card on the door of the unit?

There are 3 two on the door and one on the outside of the mpu box.

I reset all 3 I/O boards. Turned machine back on. Same result. I turned off the machine and then unplugged the printer. Turned the machine back on. Unit did not power up the monitor or cycle the bv.

Do you have any spare parts or another S2000?

The only other ones I currently have is a Ms. Little green men and Munsters.

The Munsters is a S2000 I believe. .25 machine. Just doesn't have the upper monitor

I swapped out the power supply behind the reels. Same results. Upper monitor not turning on and bv didn't cycle. Any other ideas for me to try? Thanks

I think we are down to CPU or backplane.
If you remove the CPU the BV cycles and the top box boots?

When I remove the CPU the top monitor boots up but I never got the bv to cycle. There is some corrosion were the varta battery was.

To add on to what Qbert (Rich) said about the BV
That is correct, without the board installed in your S2000 your machine should light up and cycle the BV. If your BV doesn't cycle, then check it by putting a known working one in and see if it cycles. If it still doesn't cycle, then your issue is either the Backplane Board or the Wiring to the BV.
so you may or may not have a bad MPU, it could be the backplane board, some wiring hooked up incorrectly, or a plus is not seated in correctly. I hope this helps you figure this problem out.

Update on the frog prince. I installed a new BV. Now with the mpu removed the BV does cycle like it should. With the mpu installed the unit still does not come on. Any thoughts? Thanks Matt

80% probably the MPU,
15% backplane
5% something else

I installed a new 1270 board from Midwest slots, now everything comes on as it should. I plugged the keyboard in and set the date and time. I saved the optimized default settings. I can't seem to get past the upper monitor saying. " initializing, please wait"

What does the VFD on the bottom say?
If it says waiting for video display then there is now a communication problem between the top box and the mpu.

On the back of the top box the plug with 4 mostly grey wires, make sure it is connected.
Those wires make their way to the communication board located at the bottom center back of the cabinet.
Make sure it is plugged in. This is the same location where a TITO would plug in.
From that center board a flat ribbon cable is plugged in and the the ribbon cable plugs into the backplane board. Make sure all connections are good. Unplug and reseat them. If they are all good the small communication board or the backplane board.
Almost sounds like your machine suffered an electrical surge.

The vfd on the bottom just says call attendant. I do have a new backplane board also. I just haven't installed it yet.

Ok call attendant what does it say when you lift the door handle?

Then it says ram error.

Perfect!
With the door open turn the jackpot key 3 or 4 times.
It should then say press the reset button for about 6 seconds and close the door.
It may do this twice follow the directions on the VFD and turn the jackpot key.

That's great glad it is working.
If you ever have to change the battery on the mpu you will need to do the same procedure with the jackpot key. No clear or key chip needed. :applause:
