Title: IGT Game King 044 Upgrade - no video; Flashboard?
Post by: Super Joker on January 26, 2023, 08:56:11 AM
Have a 3902 that works fine. Ended up picking up an 044 backplane, mpu and flashboard. Person I acquired it from stated the backplane and MPU were tested good, but the flashboard they were tossing in was untested (GK 003448), and priced the set accordingly.

Removed the old, installed the new - powered up, yellow/green lights lit up, no video and no deck lights. Powered down and re-seated tray, powered on again - no video, no dinging, etc. I could see the monitor receive power - it was just blank. When pressing the reset, monitor displays "No Signal". Powered down, installed Key 28, powered up - same symptoms with no video. Went ahead and swapped it back to my 3902 setup (working fine).

Anything I can further check to help narrow it down to (hopefully) a bad flashboard?

Can you test the MPU with a known good flashboard?

What type of monitor do you have?  Some need to have adjustments made to properly display 044 video signals.

generally the machine will tell you if the flash is bad. I'm with tilt, check the settings on you monitor especially if it's a ceronix.

There is a jumper about 1 -2" from the vga port on some 17" ceronix monitors that needs removed for 044.

Here's the back of my Ceronix. No jumpers that I could see on the display board, nor on the bottom by the connections.  As I am new to the Game King / Igames (did original S, S+ slots for some time), my knowledge of the tips/tricks are limited.

No other boards I can test with - only machine I have at the moment.

Backplane does have J1 jumper at the top, if that's the jumper being talked about.

As there were no bells/whistles, nor deck lights when I had powered it up, it made me think it might be more than a video signal issue.

You have to remove the cover to get to the jumper. That board on the outside is the touchscreen board.

Got it.

Will try this all again this afternoon, and report back.

Many thanks

Popped the cover. Don't see a jumper.

What is the purpose of the jumper? I see there's an H/V sync option in the monitor menu

In further digging and internet searching, it appears that I'm on the right track - my monitor does not have a jumper, so it is the software setting via OSD menu that needs toggled (as per my picture)

Will report back again when I've done the swap out...

Here is a pic of an 044 ceronix I have.

Yes.  Some have jumpers that need to be changed, others it is in then onscreen menus, and some automatically adjust on their own.  It all depends on make/model.

If you press the first raised button from the left, the monitor will automatically set. The first button is concave.

That was it, display working now.

Bootup indicates Zero Check Error, Check And Replace Flash.

Tried a ram clear with Key 28 and reboot, no go. Tried keychip function, hangs indefinitely on the "wait" screen.

So I'm guessing bad flashboard.

You are welcome to send me the flash board to reflash and install a DEV39 boot chip. No charge if I can't make it work except for return shipping. PM if interested.

Newly tested/working flash board. Boots up to the new 39 keychip. Went through standard options, disabled DSA and SHA. When I get to the PURPLE keychip bar and select NON-WAP, it freezes.

Rebooting and stepping through ends up at; Eeprom Device Error -0x10000004  It won't step through past this error.

Bad backplane eprom(?)

NOTE: Attempted to clear the motherboard E2 - machine hangs at this point as well. From what I've read, it would seem that the backplane 8-pin eeprom could be the culprit. I've tried re-seating it, verified orientation, etc.

I only have this one machine, no other GK parts. Should I just order a 24c256? Any reason not to try the one from my 3902 backplane? (other than losing data)

Kinda looks that way.  When you say it won't step through it, do you mean it comes right back after turning the reset key.  You can't use one from a 3902 because they are 16kb and 044 requires a 256k backplane EEPROM.

What I mean is that it "locks up" - that is, the touchscreen won't respond to "go back" or "restart".  It will just sit indefinitely on the screen until power cycled.

So when I go into the Green menu and try to reset E2 eeprom - as soon as I select that option - no more response from touchscreen (won't respond to 'go back' or 'restart').

When I go into Purple menu and choose NON-WAP; as soon as I select that option - no more response from touchscreen (won't respond to 'go back' or 'restart').

As both these options involve reading or writing to the EEPROM - my rudimentary troubleshooting leads me to believe potentially an eeprom issue.

As it responds fine to the Red bar ram clear command - I'm thinking the processor board is potentially OK.

Replacing it would be the next thing to do then.  If you have to order some get a few extra in case you get a couple of extra 044 MPUs and want to swap out games easy.  They're cheap and the shipping will probably the the same for 1 or 10.

I would like to add that I had his flash board here a few days ago. Installed it with my MPU in my machine and everything worked perfect. The 256kbit eeprom would be my next move then the MPU. I'm not ruling out a netplex issue either with the touch screen freezing.

Yep, many thanks to RB, fast help and turnaround.

Had 0 issues with the 3902 setup - and no issues with 044 functions that didn't involve access to the eeprom.

I've got (either 4 or 6) eeproms on the way, should be here by/on Monday.

Hate to say it, but might have to keep my eyes out for a spare 044 MPU...

UPDATE: New eeproms arrived this afternoon. Swapped out, booted, went to menu. Clear ram = OK, clear E2 Memory, OK!!! Rebooted, and it works. Went to keychip menu and setup accounting to test, all working (other than my mechanical meters are going nuts after putting in $100 bill - probably need to adjust the currency value).

I figured it had to be the eeprom when it would "hang" on functions that were reading/writing to it. Glad it was a cheap fix! Now I just need to play with the various denominations, games on each denom, and payout percentages.

Many thanks to those that assisted

You can bypass the meters but next time you are in the key chip menu, change the meters from AU to dollars. Big difference.

LOL, yeah, I had seen AU was the default when I went back into the menu after my "success" post. Saw that and already changed it to US$, still learning the setup on this. The new keychip is GREAT! Love not having to swap out chips! Best thing since cheese on a burger!
