Title: WMS 400 Dotmation Power Supply Issue
Post by: zach117100 on March 12, 2023, 02:12:45 PM
I recently acquired a couple machines, one being a WMS 400 X-Factor machine. These are my first ever machines.

The WMS 400 would power on, reels spin, cash handler would init, and then front panel would display " dot FAIL ". This led me to inspecting the dotmation power supply and control board up top.
I noticed a blown fuse on the upper power supply, labeled as a F4A 250V. I ordered these fuses and replaced it and attempted to power it on. Now the machine seemingly doesn't power on at all.
The mbu board displays only the 1st and 5th red LED light ON.

I've disconnected the upper power supply entirely and the machine still does not fully power on anymore and the mbu board displays the same 1st and 5th LED lights ON.

This machine sat for a while before I acquired it, and I've been reading up on a lot of these PSUs just dying and needing replacement. Is this analysis indicative of a now bad lower psu? I figured that since the upper power supply is operable again, perhaps the full load was just too much for the old lower power supply and it just killed it?

No smoke, no burning smell, and no failed components from what I can see without removing the lower PS and opening it up.

Any guidance here would be very appreciated. Will attach some photos for reference.

Thank you!

Most likely both upper and lower original power supplies have failed. Check in the bottom of the cabinet back right side behind the hopper and see if it has an ATX power supply in there. If there is one in there it's the conversion used to replace the original upper and lower power supply. If it's in there it most likely has failed and needs replaced. If there is not an ATX computer supply in there, you will most likely want to do the ATX computer power supply conversion.   As the original power supply boards are not available.   https://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=28829.0  Also the power distribution board has some caps and fuses that can fail. The power distribution board is inside where the lower power supply is located.

Thank you for this, Sunrise. I appreciate it a bunch! I'll explore this method and will let you know in a few weeks what the results are.

Thank you again!

Hello again,

I had a question about the instructions provided in https://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=28828.0

In the section where it mentions:

"Using a soldering iron splice in two new red wires (Moderator's clarification: gang all of the red wires together) to the existing Wms harness' ...."

Does ""gang all of the red wires together""  mean to solder all of the red wires together?

I'd say it's definitely the lower power supply. Perhaps try opening the power distribution box ( lower power supply is inside and check the fuse in it). With only 2 LEDs lit, I think that is definitely the issue. If you opt to not do the ATX route ( not a fan of it personally); I have lower power supplies available. Good luck and keep us posted. Well, so far so good. It seems this solution was able to restore my main PS issue. Thank you a bunch for the advice on this! MBU reports all voltages. Only thing I dont like is I have to turn on/off each power supply independent of each other, however I dont see myself worrying about this later on when this unit is left on and running for use.  :thank_you:

My next goal is to implement the dotmation PS modification. I will reply back here in the following weeks with the results of that. Hoping my luck with this machine fix continues like this.

In the mean time, I'm luckily a local to AZ SLOTS so I plan to take a trip down there this week and possibly purchase an IGT machine from them. I'm really interested in acquiring a double/triple diamond machine

If you plug in the new ATX power supply to the receptacles at the back of the Williams power supply, it will be switched with the main switch. The receptacle on the front is unstitched.

Alright, I have an update for you guys.

First off, thank you a whole bunch for the reference to the ATX mod. It saved this machine so far!

When I booted it up first time with both bottom and top power supplies replaced, and no coin hopper installed, it turned on, cycled the reels, and then popped up with 800+ credits. It let me place bets and spin, and win. It was awesome! :propeller: Then I pressed the cashout button... :duh: I heard some clicks, and then a 'HprJ' code had appeared. This was odd since it wasn't even installed.

I tried installing the coin hopper and then booting the machine again, this time it showed 'HprE'. I added some quarters, since its a .25 machine, and booted the machine again, but it presented the same error code, 'HprE'.

I'm digging in the manual now to find out what all the parameters mean in the menu. I want to try and make it a coinless machine until I can fix the hopper or replace it.
I have some ram clear chips for this machine arriving soon so I intend to do that as soon as I get them.

In the mean time, I will link a video of this machine as it first worked again and then now as this HprE issue persists.

Thank you again!

'hopper empty'. coins are not being dispensed. Put some quarters in hopper, hold brake down and turn pinwheel by hand to see why coins are not dispensing.
