Title: Old Spielo Bells/poker
Post by: gonemad on March 13, 2023, 03:01:06 PM
I came across this old Spielo swinging bells/poker combo. It booted to a pixelated screen. Tested the Z80, it's fine. Monitor tested good. Removed the 3.6v battery, it was toast. I noticed there is no chip at H14. not sure if this is intentional or not, I could find nothing on the interweb at all. Not sure if a dead battery will cause problems to not boot or it just saves data. Dumped a few roms but nothing showed up in romident. Not sure if it's worth putting much time into or not. I have never seen it working.

Can you post a photo of the entire machine? The battery likely just saves data. Have you checked ALL the circuit board connections, connectors, etc. I've had a few machines where the MPU connector was dirty. I'd also re-seat all the IC's as well.

I ordered a new battery. I have removed and cleaned up all removable IC's. I'll do the connections and I will reflow the larger header pins. We'll see what happens then. The battery should be here in a day or so.

Ok. I cleaned and reseated everything I could. Did a small reflow. And managed to get one thing on the screen. Here’s what I have now with a couple pics of the rest of the cab. I should note it boots to this without a battery, whether this makes a difference or not.

Progress!
I'm somewhat certain that the battery simply holds game/win data but not entirely sure. Will your battery be in this week?
Keep us posted.
I'm going to notify another member, who's MUCH smarter than I. Hopefully he will chime in soon.

Likely not a battery issue but just for the heck of it, can you measure the battery voltage? I have had supposedly new batteries that were low voltage.

On the S+ (slot) and PE+ (Poker)  platform. The battery keeps the MPU CMOS in sync with the CMOS on the motherboard.
Depending on how long the battery has been dead - post battery change its common to get a 63 or 65 error indicating that memory is corrupt.
A flick of the reset key open/close of the door and it clears - basically resetting the CMOS sync status.

Sometimes you will get a 61 error - which is normal after a game change, then that goes to a 61-1 and then should clear. Again there are quite a few threads on this site where the 61-1 goes back to a 61 over and over again and then we need to run a clear chip through the system to factory reset it.

In a long winded way - While I have no experience with the Spielo platform - It sounds pretty normal to me to have the memory corruption once the battery is pulled.
So there needs to be a means in which to clear this error.....

Thanks for this information. I will dig into this this weekend. I'm thinking the door switches on this have been disabled and there is no reset switch, just where one should go, but think it never was installed. There are a lot of jumpers but not really labelled with anything.

Unfortunately, I really cannot help.  But that board does look very similar to a Cherry Master board.  Can you post a closer photo of the area circled in red?  Is either one of those key switches a reset?

One key switch is marked Bookkeeping and the other is Test. I'm going to start fresh again this weekend, Starting at the board voltage and so on. This is whats stamped on the pcb. I can't find anything remotely close to this on the interweb, so even figuring the pinout of the edge connector is a task.

Everything seems to be good so far. Voltage on the board is around 4.8. That should be fine. there is good clock on the cpu with a good reset. There are jumpers around certain areas ofthe board. one right next to the battery, this makes no difference. there is a cluster of 4 in one area. I started pulling them are depenind on which is pulled, I will get a "rom error" instead of the "memcorrupt2". There is 2 rows of dip switches on the bottom board but I'm assuming those are just game settings?
