Title: Best way to refinish gold door on WMS reel slot
Post by: TNTTRX on April 22, 2022, 07:28:32 AM
I've had this slot a long time, it's always worked great but the finish is starting to get really bad.

The finish by the button panel is the worst, is there any way to brush or spray that would be decent?  Maybe plasti-dip?

I'd be willing to have it plated or powder coated, but removing all of the wiring and everything from the door scares me a bit...

It’s fairly rare to have a Venetian dotmation. That’s why it has gold chrome and not the silver chrome finish. The Venetian ordered a big lot of gold chrome cabinets for for the casino floor, but over time time they replaced them with higher revenue machines and “trashed” those machines. Some made it out to hobbyists, but very limited amounts. Unless it really bothers you, I would not touch it. You will not get your money back. Normally, if it was silver, I would recommend buying a used one and just replace it. Unfortunately, I don’t know anyone with an extra gold deck. Send me a PM if are are interested in any other dotmations. I collect, repair and potentially sell old Williams machines. Where you located? Hope this helps!

Thanks
Terps

looking at the photo of this machine, a couple of questions come to mind. Can the current gold finish be polished and restored or is the finish oxidizing or wearing through? If it is wearing through, is there chrome beneath it? Perhaps the gold can be stripped off exposing the chrome?

I don't know what type of plating or coating they used in this vintage machine, but in later IGT machines the gold coating is not chrome. It is Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD). This is a very thin coating of a nitride material applied over chrome in a vacuum chamber. I have an S+ machine in which the previous owner stripped the gold off revealing a nice chrome finish. He did it because the gold was wearing through and looked bad. I'm not sure how he stripped it. Maybe with steel wool. The results look very good. Like an original chrome machine,

You might try testing the finish in some hidden out of the way area using some very fine (0000) steel wool with mineral oil and see what happens.

I use Eagle One origional Nevr-Dull wadding polish, takes the worn gold off to the chrome finish underneath. Works great rub in a circular motion wipe off with a soft cloth. No scratching. Stephanie.

Not sure how well this works, but maybe they have a gold product as well.

That probably doesn't work too well when there's a gold finish already on the metal?
You have to get the gold finish off first.....without scratches.
I'd go with the polish AZslot recommends.
