Title: Data East Games
Post by: channelmaniac on May 04, 2014, 07:50:08 PM
Fixed: Captain America:
Symptom: Dead, missing parts.

Replaced 2 missing proms with ones pulled from parts Capt America board. Moved over 7 EPROMs from the parts board and burned an EPROM to replace the missing 8th. Fixed a short on the bottom of the board. CPU would not come up. Checked the reset line - it was being held high and never cycled from low to high to have the CPU boot normally. Traced it back and replaced a broken capacitor to fix the board.

Model: Burger Time
Symptom: Dead. Dirty board.

Cleaned boards. Replaced 16 corroded 24-pin sockets and 3 corroded 40-pin sockets. Cleaned the legs on the PSG2 AY-3-8910 sound chip. Replaced the sound 6502, 2732 EPROM, and PSG1 AY-3-8910 chips as they had rotted legs. Cleaned all the ROMs on the top board and reinserted them. Replaced 6 2732 Graphics EPROMs on the bottom board with rotted legs. Patched 2 traces to the Work RAM and the game would boot to a red screen of green half-diagonal blocks. Rearranged the graphics ROMs based on the schematic and the board booted to a blank red screen.

Patched a broken trace on the top board causing DIP Switch 1, switches 2-8 to not be read. Recapped the audio section and replaced 2 broken resistors. Game would not boot into self tests with a red screen and orange text, but the screens would fly by quickly. Patched multiple broken traces on the 74LS74 IC at 13F in the coin switch input circuit to fix the coin switch inputs which were used to switch self-test screens. Patched a bad trace on 6J, pin 6, to the graphics RAM at 8J, Pin 15, to fix the red screen issue. Patched more bad traces on the bottom board to finish getting the game running, but the colors were incorrect on the screen.

There is more than one boardset style to Burger Time! Found a picture online and rearranged the ROMs to match to fix the color issue. The positions listed in MAME do not match the board locations for the ROMs on this version of board. Tested.

Symptom: Dead. Garbage on screen.

This was a "fun" one... Replaced 3 Program ROMs, 1 Sound Program ROM, 2 of the 3 Character ROMs, and 2 Background ROMs. Replaced a bad Work RAM and a Sound Work RAM chip. Replaced a 74LS04 and a bad 74LS245 that had a short on the enable pin being driven by the 74LS04 that was replaced. Board would boot and clear the screen but would put up blocks. Replaced 2 bad 74LS194 chips in the Character ROM circuit, a bad 74LS04 with a stuck output, and a bad Bipolar PROM in the Horizontal timing section to restore the video. Board would boot to the title screen then the CPU would lock up. Traced through the address decoding and found where the board would read the TILT sensor before locking up. That circuit worked. When it locked up it would be stuck with a repeating high/low signal to the 74LS244 buffer on DIP Switch 1. Pins 1 and 19 were tied together and pin 19 of the LS244 read 320 ohms to +5v and 270 ohms to ground. Replaced the LS244 and successfully tested the game.

PAL at A2 was half out of its socket. Removed, straightened its pins, and reseated it. Top and bottom PCBs were not seated properly, reseated them and tested. No green. Cleaned edge connector and tested. Game had some corrupt graphics. Replaced missing IP17 ROM chip and tested. Game lost audio after 5 minutes. Recapped the audio section, removed a wire hack and capacitor bodge from the board and replaced the missing NF17 filter in the video ground circuit. Played game all the way to the end with much louder audio now with no failures.

Model: Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja
Symptom: White screen.

Replaced the physically broken sound capacitor, 3 bad Palette RAMs, and 1 bad CPU RAM. Board booted but both the main CPU and sound subsystem would freeze at random. Checked the board and found that 'random' meant, when the board was flexed. Replaced the 68000 CPU, YM2203C sound chip, and a 74LS245 bus latch that had broken pins where they met the PCB. Seems the board was severely bent, enough to pop some chip legs apart. Tested to find no sprites. The custom at 3C had no activity on the address and data lines going to the graphics ROMs and to the RAMs next to it. Found pin 117 was missing its signal. Patched the trace between pin 117 of the custom and pin 10 of the LS174 at C13. Tested.

68K CPU stuck with the /HALT line actively low. Checked address and data lines for activity. Checked control lines for activity. Each started up momentarily before the CPU halted. Dug deeper and found data lines 0 and 1 shorted on the far side of the 74LS245 latches. Followed the shorts to the 3 large surface mount custom ICs. Removed a solder short and tested.

Board arrived with a complaint of no audio but was dead.

Replaced 68K CPU as it had multiple broken pins on each end of the chip. (This boardset is vulnerable to bending which breaks those pins.) Replaced  missing RCDM-I1 protection SIP on control inputs. Replaced 74LS74 in the interrupt circuit on the sound CPU as it had stuck outputs. Replaced bad Sound RAM chip. Board now had sound, but was missing some of the effects. Replaced dead YM2203 sound chip and tested.
