Title: Jeninings Dutch Boy
Post by: off-track on March 26, 2017, 09:56:29 PM
This one followed me home today.   :dancing_2:

Th  first reel appears to be a little out of round so it hangs once in a while but everything seems to function correctly.  Haven't opened it up yet to see but looks good so far?

I've rebuilt two of that style gooseneck Jennings machines. Castings different, insides usually very similar. Pretty straight forward, just be sure everything is lubed where needed.

They're always nice looking when cleaned up a bit.

I have a Jennings I picked a few years back that I need to go thru. It does not always payout. I think the slides are installed out of order. Don't they have marks to show there order of installation?

I'm a little shy of messing with the patina of older machines as all I hear is that it's "preferred" leave it as is.  Obviously a full on restoration is one thing but, what's considered as "cleaned up a bit" vs detracting from original?

Amechanic, I did see a pretty good start on a Jennings rebuild from bottom up on youtube but it was interrupted just before the upper end part.  From that and a few others showing common payoff issues I'd be looking at the the payoff indexing finger bundle?

Agreed. If the machine is fully original and has never been modified, leave it as found. It will hold its value well.

The machines I have cleaned, painted and polished were revamps that didn't have original paint and were obviously re-done (badly) by former owners, so I figured it's safe to try and restore its original look. I also have a Little Duke with a side vender that is as original as it gets, and it has its patina. Did a very minor clean-up to keep it in original condition:
