Title: Com port settings
Post by: AJ on April 30, 2020, 11:14:42 AM
I've been pulling my hair out trying to get my WMS BB2 to connect to a pc.  I have tried straight through serial cable and cross over null modem cable.

Does anyone know what the com port settings need to be for the serial port on the pc?

When i open the terminal in putty I dont see anything.

Thanks,
AJ

Did you set the jumper for the Com port to RS232?  Also the com port settings depend on the protocol you are using for it.

Im trying to use it for sas @ home.

The jumpers on the backplane on my BB2 look like they are set to rs232 and i see the transmit light flashing but i still see nothing when i open the connection in the terminal.

Also a side note i did a paper clip loopback test on my serial port and cable and that worked no problem.

I had difficulties using the sas @ home program with anything but an Edgeport multiport serial adapter. It didn't work for me using my laptop's built-in port, or one of those cheap USB-RS232 adapters.  Bought the Edgeport and things just worked.

Ill give that a try.  I just scored an 8 port one on ebay for $50.

Thanks for your help!

From the edgeport, you will need null modem cables to connect to the RS-232 port on the backplane.

Are you using a null modem cable with crossed rx/tx lines?

I am.  I also have a straight through.  I failed with both.

Are you selecting Enhanced sas protocol?  I also found that using 64bit windows works better than the 32bit version.

Yes, i selected enhanced and i was using 64 bit windows 7.

I even attempted to get a connection on host2 thinking my backplane might be messed up.  But no dice.

I think you also need to set the baud rate to 9600 with even parity.

For the record I had limited success with my BB2 with this program, not all games would work.  Not sure if it was OS dependent or what.  I could never get it to work on my Blade or my BB1, but others have been able to do it.  It did work with Bally alphas, IGT AVP, and Aristocrats, but wms was a mixed bag.

I'll give it a shot.  I was using a os in the 13 family.  I'll try a game that's in the 9 family.

just tried with those settings on 2 different games/oses and no go.  what is really stumping me is i don't even see the machine polling in terminal.

So, i was able to connect to the machine with a terminal application.  I could send to the machine (saw the receive light on the backplane flash when i sent data). But i still never saw anything back from the machine.) SAS @ home continues to just freeze when i try to connect.
