What are the advantages of a GEN2 printer?

The older seiko, they don't make parts for anymore. You might get lucky and find a refurbished head if the current one goes bad. Gen2 is easy to find since the Gen2U came out, parts easy to find new. For the home user there would really be no difference since you wouldn't be loading firmware on a regular basis. Gen2U's advantage is easy to load firmware and use in machines that have different printer comm protocols. Gen2 you can do that but you have to access the cpu board and switch jumpers. Again, not an issue for most home users.
Compared to Ithaca 950s, eh, they both are fairly reliable, though I've never had many to work on. Easier to remove the 950s from the machine if needed, no cable to disconnect.
