What the story is missing is that once he went public with this is that the CRA (Canadian Revenue Association - equivalent to the the US IRS) came after him to pay capital gains on the value of the house.
Capital gains of 50% is due when you sell, however when you barter your way up you owe 50% on all those trades leading up to the house.
So if you went from a $50 bike to a $500 boat and from boat to a $2000 car.

You would pay the difference between the bike and the boat $225 (1/2 of $50) as it presumes that the gain you made was on the bike.
And then again the gain from the boat to the car.... $750 (1/2 of 1500 gain).... and you haven't even sold the car !!

This is why he ended up donating the house to town.
