Title: Wood base
Post by: jimliner on November 16, 2016, 07:56:45 PM
Hi All,

I am planning to replace wood base below the cabinet liner underneath hopper.

Has anyone had to do this?  Looking for any tips or lessons learned.   Existing (whats left) rotted.

    Thanks.

Some pictures of the current base (from several angles) would help a lot.

Finally getting back to this.    Thought I could just remove the 8 nuts from the liner bolts.  I need to also remove all the wood screws that go through liner floor.  Also original wood appears to be 1" plywood.  Not easy to find locally.   Might use solid piece of wood.   Only ~ 18" x 15.5".
It will be slow job.   Might make template in process.

I think the hardest part to do is if your machine has the metal band going around the O/S edge of the wood base. I don't know it that sits in a groove around the outer edge of the base. If you have some basic wood working tools it doesn't look too hard, but if you don't it could be a chore. I'd see if there were any places near you that do wood working.
A saber saw or jig saw could cut out the base, but I'd use a drill press with a way to set the depth of the holes. A spade bit would make the area for the flat washers, then you just need to finish drilling the thru holes.

I hope I will be alright.   Table saw to cut to size.   Router to round front corners and put front lip on leading edge.  Might have to buy the right router bit to put in groove for the chrome band.  I have the bits  and drill press to counter sink bolts.

Finding the chrome band might take some searching.   Keep ya posted.

Jim,

When it comes to putting the narrow grove in the edge, you can turn the board on edge and run it through the table saw. Diablo makes a blade that is 1/16 of an inch wide. If the grove is wider, just need to move the fence over a fraction. Might have a trim piece for the bottom, if not check with Jon. He has dismantled a lot of machines.
