Title: 044 Flash Burner
Post by: oldgeiser1 on June 29, 2017, 08:10:41 AM
Does anyone have any information about this item listed on EBAY?

I know some of the dealers use them to repair flash boards where the program has gone corrupt.  I don't know how reliable they are, etc.

Well somebody bought it!
I'd be leery of something coming from Latvia.
I miss the "old" Ebay... you used to be able to see who bought items. Obviously there were privacy concerns but it was fun.

I went ahead and bought it.  My research revealed that 5 identical units had been sold within the last 2 years and there was no negative feedback on the seller.  Of course that doesn't insure that the product is good.  The cost was about half of what the others had sold for, and about 1/3 of the price for an Exocet, so what the hell, it's only money, right?

I bought a 3902 SIMM programmer from Latvia a few years ago for about what you paid for the 044.    They were selling both models back then, but the 044 model went for about $1200 or so I think.  Never had any problems with it or them.  I hope your experience is the same.

The good and the bad of it.
Item arrived in 6 days from Latvia to Las Vegas, over a holiday, I'd say that is impressive. Packaged to the extreme.
There is no manual or any kind of printed instructions.
Driver installation instructions on disc along with drivers.
Driver is not digitally signed so enforcement of that rule must be disabled on you're computer.
There is no power cord for the transformer, had to get one at Best Buy, $15.
Communication with seller is good, acceptable English.
The machine tells you immediately if the board is bad.
It will read, write and erase.  Don't know how it would repair a board except by replacing corrupt data, of course you would
need to have the good data for replacement.
Now I need to start building a library.
Was it a good buy?  Only time will tell, it doesn't eat anything.
Did I need it?  LOL, right, just like I need 19 machines in my house.
It's only money, can't take it with you, right?

It's been a month, have you put that thing to work?

I just got involved with IGT 044 stuff and I'd like to be able to back up my boards since they are so static fragile.  Lots of money but what do you think of the programmer?

Once I determined that the device worked as it should I set it aside and have not touched it.
Other projects were more pressing (sitting on my azz and goofing off).  New granddaughter,
son visiting for 10 days, etc.  Now I am on vacation in Missouri for a month (may be my last
chance to see a total eclipse).  I'll start playing with it when I get back to Vegas.
Another board member recently purchased one, no doubt that he will give some good info
once he receives it and has time to play with it.

So, what kind of supply of 044 flashboards is there?

I would think a flash board would be like a computer jump/flash drive and could be erased and written to a number of times.

Are they a one size fits all or are there different sized boards?

Two different sized boards, so called 128MB and 256MB boards.  These boards are really fragile and they go bad rather easily.  I know someone with a flash burner and he has a boatload of bad boards that can't be flashed correctly.

If a board goes "bad" as you say is it toast or can it be re-flashed and put back into service?  [I see that you mentioned your buddies can not be re-flashed correctly]

Let's say I toast a board.  Can I buy a blank replacement? [got a good source?]  Do I have to buy an existing board and erase it and program my backup software to it?

I'm gonna assume that the programmer oldgeiser procured from Latvia will do that???

Thanks in advance...

There are no "blanks."  This is an IGT proprietary product.  You can only buy used boards (unless you have a source that can buy from IGT at what is probably some out of range pricing).  My friend just buys "bulk" boards.  On average about 15 to 20% of the boards are DOA and just get trashed.  I've had boards that had working games on them, but re-flashing killed it.   Overall, I wouldn't recommend you get a board and reflash on demand.  These things were not designed to be re-used like standard memory cards are.  I see nothing wrong with backing up what you have in case it ever goes bad, you can try to fix, or buy a used board with a lottery game on it and re-flash it.
