Title: Trying to change game choices for my PE+
Post by: ujikiohana on August 19, 2020, 03:24:50 PM
Hi, I'm looking for some information.

I have an IGT Players Edge Video Poker Machine.  I am a new owner and I replaced the main board and now have a working machine.  I have a PE+ superboard.  Currently I have Bonus Poker, Bonus Poker Deluxe, Deuces Wild Poker, Jacks or Wild Poker, and Double Bonus Poker.  The DATA ROM is XM00002P.  I attached an image of a board that looks just like mine in case I am mistaken about the kind of board I have.
I would like to change the selection of games I have (double double poker, white hot aces poker, etc) and also get tournament mode.  What exactly do I need to get be able to play these games?  I understand I need to get different chips but which ones hold the games?  What chip or chips would I need to get?  Is it just one chip?  Or is it a set?  What are they called so I can search for them?
Any help is appreciated.  I've been searching around but am confused about what exactly I need to change my games.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

My first reference - is to send you to the NLG home page, RicKs FAQs (bottom right) and subsequently the IGT game bible. This has a general list of the Poker games.
BrianT on this forum is the second reference I will refer you to as he has complied the most comprehensive list of games including PE+ slot games.
His excel listing might be in our downloads section that you can access if you are a contributing member.

Yours is a multipoker set - I think there are 3 different sets of Multipoker.
Most however are single games.

To change games you need up to 7 chips.

There is a Game and Data Chip which are the main two chips you need to replace to play a SuperBoard game.
You can also play non-superboard games which just require a Game Chip and the data chip stays empty.

The non-superboard chips are smaller in capacity I believe 27c256 vs 27c512 so there a dipswitch you need to change on the board to adapt to the smaller capacity chips.

Next there is a Set of MX chips, MXO,MXB,MXG,MXR and a small chip called a CAPX on the superboard (and a Cap Chip on a non-superboard).
These control the colors and backgrounds. You want a compatible set of MX and the right CAP to go with the game you are putting into the machine.
Several different games may use the same set of color chips so you don't always need to replace them.

Now there is also something called a WING board. Its a small board that plugs into the Game Chip slot and you can plug in 5 game chips.
The catch however is that they all must all be superboard games and they must use the same data chip and they must all use the same graphic sets.
The short story is that the number of compatible games for the wing board doesn't work out to be that many combinations.... but it can be done !!!
As long as you have games that share the same data chip you can use incompatiable graphic chips and put up with funky colors.
This would never happen in a real casino but the regulations governing your basement tend to be a bit looser ...... lol

Lastly in terms of buying game sets - you can check with most of the vendors on our home page - identify yourself as a NLG member and they will help you out.

Hope this helps.

The currently available master list is here:  http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=2547.0 (http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=2547.0)

If possible could you please provide a larger (higher res) picture of your board and ROMs for documentation purposes.  I'd like to compare against what I have already documented.

Thank you!

So regarding your other questions:

There are 7 chips the usually make up a game / set on these superboards.

First you have the PROGRAM chip which runs the games and is usually marked as XP000xxx where the final 3 x's are program designation
Then next to that you have the DATA chip which is numbered X00xxxxP - this controls the game type & payout

Next comes the CG or character graphics chips these are the CGxxxx MR0, MG0, MB0 & MX0 and these contain the game graphics

Finally you have the CAPXxxxx chip and this is smaller PROM that controls the color.

That's the basic version...  Now, not every PROGRAM chip is compatible with every DATA chip.  Certain PROGRAM or DATA chips require specific CG ROM chips and in order to have the correct colors you need the correct CAPX chip.  There are many CG sets the "work" with program X + data Y chips but aren't the "correct" or exact match.  Some games have specific graphics that aren't available in standard CG ROM chips.  Those include the Shockwave games, the "Treasure Chest" games and ACE$ Bonus to name just a few.  If you don't match up the correct CG ROMs many parts of the game will display the wrong graphics and become basically unplayable.

So to change the game on your machine will generally require 7 chips:  1 Program chip, 1 Data chip, the 4 corresponding CG ROM chips with 1 matched CAPX chip.

Hope that helps.

Some of this information was available on the net, some wasn't.

I attached some better photos of the board and roms.

Just for reference I currently have:
Data Prom: XM00002P
Game Prom: XMP00006
Character: CG2174
CAPX 1321

Thank you guys again for this information.  I feel like I have a much better understanding of what's needed.  Just to make sure I understand correctly, for some of the multi-game sets available, I may be able to find sets that require just an XM and XMP chip that work with my existing 4 CG chips while other single games may require changing the 4 cg chips to match any new data or game chips?  Assuming they work with my current cap chip.  Is this about right?

Regarding games like "Treasure Chest"...so will my particular machine/board play these games if I have the right set of chips?  I also saw somewhere that it's possible to download and burn your own chips using a eprom programmer.  Is that possible?

The Superboard will play any of the PE+ games, even the older ones that were made for the non-superboard.
You will be able to play Treasure Chest etc ... just need the right chip sets.

Your understanding of the chip sets is correct.

In addition to the 3 superboards I have I also picked up a couple of spare non-superboards they tend to be brown in color and just swap them out to play other games rather than changing chips all the time.
Put them in one of the silver board trays and they just slide in. Makes a game change just too simple.

You can get an eprom burner and burn your own chips. The one that is hard to burn is the Capx chip. Most modern burners won't write to that type of chip any more and finding blank Capx's are rare.
The alternative to this is that you can build an adapter that plugs into a Capx spot and then you use a standard 27C256 with the Capx programming written to it. One fellow even went as far as to put a 4spot dipswitch on it so he could select from a number of different capxs all written to one chip.

Additionally there was a fellow on the forum that also created a editor to create your own card backs that you could burn to the CG ROM Chips.
You pick your favorite game, load the matching CG binaries into the editor make the mods, and write it out to a new version of the binary and then you burn it to the chip.

You can find details of these hacks by digging through the PE+ forum listing or on the archive site newlifegames.net

Very nice!  I guess it's just a matter of finding the chip sets then.  And it does make sense to have multiple boards vs changing the chips!  I'm definitely going to look into the editor.  I'm pretty sure this is something I can do.

Thank you for this info!

With your program chip XMP00006, you could just change the data chip to one of the other Multi Poker chips and then change to the needed CG ROM chips.

Also, case in point.  To get 100% correct colors _ALL_ of the multi poker CG ROM chips should be run with the CAPX2174.

I know I have a couple of those Multi Poker sets and CG ROM sets around here.  I have like 15 or 20 of the XM00004P sets with CG2196 + CAPX2174, also the XM00005P with CG2240.

Just a quick peek, I have ACE$ Bonus, Shockwave, Pay The Aces No Faces, Barbaric Duces, Jackpot Poker all sets with original CG ROMs + CAPX chips.  I also have like 2000 other chips that I don't have specifically cataloged that I would have to sort through. I've bought a few shops PE+ collection  :Tongue_Out:  all in an effort to archive for MAME.  So yeah, I have a few spare chips.

Hey BrianT thanks for the response.  How much are you selling the multi poker sets for?  And are the others (ACE$ Bonus, Shockwave, etc) individual game sets?  How much are you selling those for?  If you are selling.  Do you have a Treasure Chest set or at least the MX CG set of 2283 or 2204 and a cap chip of 2283?
